Austin Ice Company Lease Approved

Ice Manufacturing Venture: The Austin Ice Company requested a 15-year lease of public land along the Colorado River (River Walk) to build an ice manufacturing facility using a patented secret invention, promising affordable ice for all residents.

Land Deal Approved: The City Council unanimously approved leasing the unused riverfront property between Brazos and San Jacinto Streets for $60 per year, with the option to renew after 15 years.

Future Community Services: The company indicated it might add a laundry or other useful machinery alongside ice production to serve community needs as the business grew.

Infrastructure Stipulation: The lease included a requirement for a 30-foot-wide street to remain between the ice manufacturing facility and nearby residential lots for public access.

Council Room January the 14th 1871 City Council met in pursuance of a call by His Honor Leander Brown Mayor, to take into consideration a Petition, presented by the Austin Ice Company Aldermen present, Alderman Raven, Demeske Collins and Tod On motion the Petition was read as follows (here), To the Honorable Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Austin. The undersigned Committee on the part of the Board of Directors of the Austin Ice Company, would respectfully represent to your Honorable body, that said association has been organized with a view particularly and for the purpose of manufacturing Ice upon a secret invention, the Patent Right of which for Travis County is owned by said Company. It is suggested also that in connection with the manufacture of Ice, said Company may as the necessities of the City require, and the interest of the Company may indicate hereafter connect with the Machi =nery necessary for their Ice manufacture a Laundry or some other Machinery and Operations which will be useful and Convenient to the Com=munity. To prosecute said undertaking Successfully and in such manner as that Ice may furnished to the residents of the City on such terms as that it will be within the reach of all, it is necessary that the Machinery be located Convenient to an abundant supply of water, Such as will be uniform and constant. In making examinations with a view to such location, your petitioners have thought that so much of the River Walk as is situated between Brazos and San Jacinto Streets, will subserve the purpose of said Company, and by its use and appropriation in the manner proposed by the Company, will add greatly to the Comfort as well as the attractions and material wealth of the City. The Space indicated is entirely unused and cannot in any manner because of its --- Page break --- topography, be Serviceable to the public interest, advantages or convenience Your petitioners therefore respectfully ask, that a lease be granted to said Ice Company for the term of fifteen years, renewable at the expiration of said term, upon such conditions as may be agreed upon between your Honorable Body and said Company H W Chandler Geo L Robertson J B Wheeler Committee Alderman Raven offered the following Resolution and moved that the blank be filled with the sum of Sixty dollars, it was passed by the following Vote, Alderman Raven, Dornschke, Collins and Ice Be it Resolved by the City Council, that a lease of Land situated on the Colorado River known as the River Walk in front of Lots No 4 5 & 6 in Block No 181, be and is hereby Leased to a Comp any known as the Artesian Ice Company for fifteen years in consideration of said Company paying into the City Treasury per annum Sixty dollars for the use of said lease of land. Said lease of land may be extended at the expiration of said fifteen years by both parties to said Contract agreeing.
