Austin City Land Sale and Public Health Ordinances 1870

Hospital Block Sale Authorized – The city council voted to allow the mayor to sell a valuable piece of city property known as the "Hospital Block" to raise funds, with a minimum sale price of $1,200.

"Houses of Ill Fame" Regulation – Council introduced a special ordinance to regulate or restrict brothels in Austin, referring it to a committee for further discussion and recommendations at the next meeting.

Quorum Issues – Two aldermen were absent from the meeting, though enough council members were present to conduct official business and pass the property sale ordinance.

21 Monday June 28 5 PM The City Council met pursuant to a call, by His Honor the Mayor Leander Brown Presiding Aldermen present, Alderman Bennett, Hemboke, Raven, and Fox, Aldermen Palon and Collins absent. The Mayor announced the special business of the meeting to be the subject of Houses of ill fame, which Ordinance was then introduced and referred to a Special Committee of Alderman Baker, Bennett and Fox who should report at the next Meeting Alderman Raven offers the following Ordinance City Ordinance Be it Ordained by the City Council of the City of Austin. That the Mayor of said City, be, and he is hereby authorized and empowered, to sell at either public or private sale, and on such terms as to him may seem most advantageous to said City, the Block in said City known and marked on the map of said City as Hospital Block, lying north of Block No 166 and east of Block No 167, and to execute to the purchaser of said Block a full thereto and this Ordinance take effect and be in force after its passage: provided that the amount to be realized from said sale shall not be less than twelve hundred Cons.
