Austin's 1870 Push for Federal Post Office

Federal Building Proposal: The city council unanimously offered land to the U.S. Government to build a permanent Post Office and Federal Courthouse in Austin, with plans to lobby their congressional representatives to secure federal funding for the project.

City Clock Installation: Council approved $1,000 in funding to purchase a clock and bell for the New Market House, passing the measure unanimously on its final reading.

Ferry House Permit: A petition from S.M. Swisher to build a ferry house on the north bank of the Colorado River near Congress Avenue and Brazos Street was granted by the council.

37 Council Room December the 12th 2 Oclock PM City Council met pursuant to a Special call His Honor Leander Brown Mayor in the Chair Roll called and the following named Aldermen answered to their Names. Aldermen Bennett, Baker, Palm Raven, & Dumschke... Following was introduced & read, Whereas the undersigned Mayor and City Council of the City of Austin are sincerely desirous of using all honorable means to secure the welfare and prosperity of said City, and are also convinced that it will inure to the advantage of the United States Government in an economical point of view, as well as to the advan tage of the City of Austin to erect a permanent and Suitable building to be used as a Post Office and Federal Court Room and such other Federal Offices as may be required in Austin, and with a view of inducing Congress to make an immediate appropriation for that purpose, hereby beg leave respectfully tender to the Government of the United States a site for the said building, said site to be hereafter agreed upon by the Agent of the United States Government and the City Council of the City of Austin At a meeting of the City Council of Austin held on Monday the 12th of December 1870 at 4 P.M The foregoing preamble was unanimously adopted And it was also Resolved that the Mayor be instructed to forward a copy of the same to our Senators, Hon W C Hamilton and Hon S B Flanagan and the Hon E Deginer with the request that they use their influence to secure the appropriation as early as possible Which Was adopted by a unanimous Vote " Ordinance, Be It Ordained by the City Council of the City of Austin, That the sum of One Thousand dollars or as much thereof as may be necessary, be and is hereby appropriated out of any money not otherwise appropriated, for the purpose of buying a City Clock and Bell for the New Market House Roll being called the Ordinance passed its second reading, Rules were Suspended and the Ordinance passed its third Reading by a unanimous Vote. --- Page break --- 38 Austin Texas December 9th 1870 To the Mayor And Aldermans of the City of Austin Gent The undersigned respectfully asks permission to erect on the North bank of the River below Congress Avenue and Brazos Street a Ferry house this permission will be granted See addendum Respectfully Your M Stert S.
