Austin's 1871 Budget & Office Changes

New City Surveyor Appointed: Rueben H Ford was unanimously approved as the new City Surveyor for Austin.

Outgoing Official Gets Transition Time: The previous office holder (A.O. Morse Sr.) requested and received permission to delay his replacement until February 1st to settle his accounts—a courtesy the council unanimously granted.

Budget Approved: The council unanimously approved nearly $1,450 in appropriations for December expenses, including salaries for the city marshal and police officers, prisoner care, and market house repairs.

School Funding Request Tabled: A reverend's petition asking for a $3,000 loan to build a schoolhouse was postponed for later consideration.

Monthly Death Report: The Sexton reported 14 deaths in December (8 white residents, 3 Mexican, and 3 Black residents).

Council Room Monday January 2d 1871 half past 7 Oclock P.M. City Council met pursuant to adjourment. His Honor Leander Brown Mayor in the Chair. Roll called and the following Aldermen answered to their & their Names (viz) Aldermen Bennett, Paliss, Rowe, Renneke, and Fox Minutes of December 5th and 12th were read, Corrected and adopted His Honor the Mayor nominated Rueben H Ford City Surveyor, and the consent thereto of the Council was unanimously given The following was read "Land Cottage January 2d 1871. The Honorable Board of the City of Austin Gentlemen, As it seems to be the will and pleasure of the Board, that I shall be removed from Office, I ask it as a special favor of the Board, to make the appointment of my successor to take effect on the 1st Tuesday in February, so as to enable me, at that time to make my quarterly Settlement, and close my official Connection with the business of the Office. I ask it as a matter of common Courtesy, and shall accept this act of Kindness gratefully. I have the honor Gentlemen, to be your Most Obliged and humble Servant A O Morse Sr and on motion, seconded the request of Mr Home was granted by a unanimous Vote. — His Honor the Mayor stated that he had received applications for the Office above referred to, from Messrs J. W. Schafford, James McGuire and C J Moore Sextons report for the Month of December was read, showing Deaths 8 whites 3 Mexicans and 3 Negroes --- Page break --- 40 Petition by Rev'd. B. J. Smith asking for a loan of $3,000. to assist him in building a School house being The foregoing petition being presented, was read, and on motion seconded carried was laid on the Table.
