153 City Council Room Austin March 12, 1872 The City council met pursuant to a call of his Honor the Mayor, J. H. Glenn Present, his Honor the Mayor, In the chair, Alderman, J. L. Buaas J. A. Robinson " Wm Breuggerhoff " S. Mussina H.C. Madison Absent, - E. M. Wheelock. His Honor the Mayor opened the meeting by reading his message - On motion of Alderman Mussina, the following Resolution was passedResolved: That the Mayors message be published in the "Journal" and "State Gazette," papers of the City, and five hundred copies for distribution. On motion of Alderman Breuggerhoff, the following Ordinance was ordained: Be it ordained by the City council of the City of Austin, That the Mayor be authorized to issue a Treasury Warrant to the Texas Military Institute for Two hundred and fifty dollars ($250) payable in ninety days, as a balance of subscription of one thousand dollarsAnd on motion of Alderman Madison, the rules were suspended and the ordinance passed to the second and third reading, and on Motion of Alderman Buaas, it was adopted by the following vote, to wit: Yeas - Aldermen J. L. Buaas, W. Breuggerhoff S. Mussina, H. Madison J. A. Robinson On motion of Alderman J. A. Robinson the following ordinance was ordained. Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Austin - That in conformity with the provisions of an act of the Legislature of the State of Texas, Approved December 1st 1871 authorizing the City Council of the City of Austin to levy and collect a tax of one --- Page break --- 154 fourth of one per cent, upon the Real Estate Assessment of said City for the year 1870. That there is here levied, and the Collector Shall proceed to collect a tax of one fourth of one per cent on the assessment of Real Estate within the city of Austin for the year 1870. For the purpose, and subject to the Restrictions of the Act aforesaid: Section 2. That this ordinance be in force and take Effect from and after its passage. On motion of Alderman Bruggerhooff the rules were suspended and the ordinance passed to its second & third reading. And on motion of Alderman Madison the vote was taken, to wit: Yeas- Alderman. J. L. Busas " Wm. Brueggerhoff " S. Mussina " JC. Madison " J. H. Robinson A communication from C. S. West was read, and commented on. On motion of S. Mussina it was laid on the table. On motion of Alderman Wm. Brueggerhoff the following resolution was passed. Resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin that the Mayor be requested to appoint a Committee of three to sell the Stock owned by the city of Austin in the Austin Joint Stock Building Association, Provided that the Stock be not sold for less than fifty cents Specia on the Dollar. Resolution was Adopted. And the following Aldermen were appointed a committee. Aldermen Brueggerhoff S. Mussend --- Page break --- 155 Alderman Mussina offered the following Resolution Resolved, by the City Council of the City of Austin that the Mayor be authorized to make the Leases of the Rooms in the new building on Pecan Street for the Steam fire Engine and the Municipal Offices. The Resolution was adopted by a unanimous vote. A Petition from the Gas Company was read and referred to a committee appointed by the chair as follows Alderman Breuggerhoff " J.C. Madison " J. N. Robinson A Petition on Water Works was read, and on Motion of Alderman Breuggerhoff the following Resolution was passed. Resolved by the City Council that the Mayor Appoint a committee to investigate the Subject and report at the next meeting of the Council Committee appointed as follows Alderman Ducaas " S. Mussina On motion of Alderman Breuggerhoff the following Ordinance was Ordained Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Austin, that the Mayor is hereby Authorized to purchase for the use of the "Austin Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1," a suitable and complete truck, such as will meet the present wants of said Company and give better Efficiency to the Fire Dept of the City. Second — That the sum of Two thousand Dollars (2,000.00) or as much thereof as may be necessary is hereby Appropriated for the purchase of said truck delivered in the City of Austin Third — That this ordinance take Effect and be in force from and after its passage, and on motion of Alderman [illegible] --- Page break --- 156 Rules were Suspended, and the Ordinance passed its Second and Third readings, and on motion of Alderman Mussina the Ordinance was Adopted- to wit: Yeas- Alderman Buaas " Breuggerhoff " Mussina " Madison " Robinson ) On motion of Alderman Mussina the following Ordinance was ordained- Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Austin that the sum of Eight Hundred and twenty five Dollars ($825.00) is hereby appropriated to pay for the five hundred feet of Additional Hose ordered by the mayor Second- That this ordinance be in force and take Effect from and after its passage. On motion of Alderman Robinson the rules were Suspended and and ordinance passed its Second and Third reading and on motion of Alderman Madison the ordinance passed with the following Vote- to wit: Alderman Breuggerhoff " Buaas " Mussina " Madison JB. Robinson [motion] of Alderman Breuggerhoff the following ordinance was ordained- Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Austin, that the Streets Running Parallel with north Avenue in Division E. be named as follows The first Street North to be named "Cherry" The Second "Linden" and the third "Chestnut" The fourth "Magnolia avenue". Musinia offered the following Resolution. Be it Resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin That the Mayor be requested to appoint a Committee to investigate the Feasibility of the Plan proposed by the Citizens of Austin to build a bridge by private subscription, across "Waller Creek" at the crossing of Cedar Street. The Committee appointed by his Mayor was as follows — Aldermen. J. L. Buaas " J. H. Robinson " H. Madison. Alderman Musinia offered the following Ordinance.
