Bremond moved that the Recorder be authorized to sell to the best advantage city warrants at the end of each week, for the amount necessary to pay off the hands working on the Streets, which motion was unanimously carried. Ald. Bremond moved that the City Surveyor be authorized to employ an assistant at the most reasonable terms possible, and report the amount of his salary at the next meeting which motion was carried. City Council Room Austin Texas Oct 6th 1873 Regular monthly meeting of the City Council. The Council was called to order by his Honor T. B. Wheeler the Mayor, in the Chair. The Roll was called and the following named Aldermen answered to their names: Ald. G.T. Boardman, Geo. Bupmann, A. Scholz, Wm. Brueggerhoff, J.H. Robinson, J. W. Hannig, A. H. Abrigley, [illegible] Absent: Ald. B.C. Sneed, C.A Bremond, and D. Thompson. On motion the reading of the minutes of the last meeting was dispensed with. Petition of Mr. Rhoads Fisher asking permission to complete his house was read, and on motion permission was granted. Petition of V.E. Allen, asking permission to open a meat market in Ward No. 9, was read, and on motion the same was laid upon the table. Division was called for, the count made resulting in 4 for and 3 against laying the petition on the table. Phillips had fenced up the Alley in Block 100 in which Block he Hushfeld owned property and praying that said Phillips be required to open said Alley, was read, and on motion the City Marshal was instructed to have said Alley opened. Petition of Msp J.S. Holbert & B.R. Woods, asking for license to open a Barroom was read and on motion the same was granted. Petition of Msp McArthur & Co. asking for license to open a Barroom was read and granted. Petition of Sarah Cassidy asking a reassessment of North half of Lot 5 Block 70 was read and on motion the same was laid on the table. Petition of Geo. O. Evans, entering complaint against the H. & T. C. R. R. Company for allowing the crossing at the track of said Company on East Avenue to remain in a dangerous condition, was then read, where- upon Ald. Bruggehoff offered the following resolution, and on motion the same was adopted, to wit: "Be it resolved by the city Council of the city of Austin that the city Marshal is hereby instructed to inform the agent of the Houston & Texas Central Rail Road that complaints have been made of of the unsafe and bad crossing on their track on East Avenue and that the Houston & Texas Central Rail Road company is hereby requested to put said crossing in good, substantial and safe condition without delay, and that a copy of this resolution be given to the agent of the H. & T. C. R. R. by the city Marshal" Committee on Streets reported in favor of and recommended the payment of $116 75/100 in city warrants to sundry Citizens for digging a public Well on Boan Street on Out Lot 4, Division "A", and on motion the report was adopted. Committee on claim of George Doolittle reported in favor of paying the same and offered the following Resolution, to wit: Be it resolved by the city Council of the city of Austin that the claim of George Doolittle for $484 75/100 be allowed in City scrip and his

Honor the Mayor is hereby authorized and requested to draw a warrant on the City Treasurer for said amount, less amount claimed on account of Collections made through Mayors Court." On motion the rules were suspended, the resolution read the second time, on motion the rules were further suspended, the resolution read the third time, On motion the ayes and nays were call, and the resolution passed by the following vote. Ayes: Ald. G. J. Boardman, George Susmann, Wm. Brueggerhoff, J. H. Robinson, J. W. Hannig, A. H. Longley. Nays: A. Scholz. Report of City Engineer regarding wages of assistant was then read, and no action deemed nec- essary. Report of City Sexton for the month of September 1873, reporting twenty interments during that month was then read. It was then moved seconded and carried that the Cemetery Committee be Authorized to procure the necessary sign-boards regarding the ordinances about cutting flowers, shrubbery, etc. in the City Cemetery and to make public the charges of the City Sexton as allowed by the city City ordinances. The city Sexton's charge of $1.00 extra for removing surplus dirt from graves having been brought before the Council, on motion the same was refered to the Cemetery Committee with instructions to report at the next meeting. The Ordinance Committee who were instructed at the last meeting to prepare an Ordinance regarding Barber Shops, reported the following ordi- nance as having been prepared by them, to wit: Be it ordained by the City Council of the city of Austin Sec. 1st That from and after this date Barber Shops shall not remain open for business after the hour of 11 o'clock A.M. on Sundays. Sec. 2nd That any person violating this Ordinance shall be guilty of a misdemeanor. Sec 3rd That this Ordinance shall take effect from and after its passage.

It was moved and seconded that the action of the Council at the last meeting granting the petition of Barbers concerning the closing of their shops be reconsidered. Carried. It was further moved and seconded that the petition be laid upon the table. The Ayes and Nays were called for with the following result. Ayes: Ald. Geo. Supersarin, A. Sholz, Wm Brueggerhoff, J. H. Hannig. Nays: Ald. G. J. Boardman, J. H. Robinson, A. H. Longley, so the petition was laid upon the table. Ald. Longley offered the following resolution: "Be it resolved that the City Marshal be and he is hereby instructed to drain by ditching Blocks No 1, 2, 3 & 4 of Division "C" and that the City Engineer is directed to run a line of levels and set the necessary grade stakes and furnish the Marshal with such other information as may be required in the prosecution of the work. On motion the same was refered to the Committee on Streets with instructions to report at the next meeting Ald. Longley offered the following resolution, and on motion the same was adopted, to wit: "Be it resolved by the City Council of the city of Austin, that no person shall be permitted to vote at the coming City Election who has not been duly registered for that purpose under the new registration now being made by the City Recorder. 2nd That the city Recorder is hereby directed to keep open the Registration Books until Saturday Night November 1st 1873. 3rd That the Recorder be requested to keep his registration office open on Saturday nights until 9 o'clock for the purpose of registration. There being no further business before the Council, on motion the meeting adjourned.
