Austin City Bridges and Fire Safety Laws

New bridge and ferry regulations — The city council passed a new ordinance (No. 25) establishing rules governing bridges and ferries in Austin.

Census authorization — Officials approved procedures for conducting a city census to count Austin's population.

Fire department upgrades — The city purchased 500 feet of rubber fire hose and elected new fire department leaders, including Chief Engineer Joe Nagle and Assistant Chief A. Ziller.

Street and cemetery improvements — The council received multiple requests to survey and open new streets (particularly on College Hill) and to formally map the city cemetery with numbered lots for record-keeping.

Property assessments — Dozens of Austin property owners had their land values reassessed for tax purposes, with values ranging from $250 to $6,000.

An ordinance No 25. was introduced to be entitled: "An ordinance regulating bridges and ferries." the ordinance was read the first time, on motion the rules were suspended the ordinance read the second time, on motion the rules were further suspended the ordinance read the third time and passed by the following vote: Yeas – Ald. Boardman Brueggerhoff, Christian, Dohme, Heitz, Mitchell, Robinson, and Todd. Nays: none. An ordinance No 26. was introduced to be entitled: "An ordinance authorizing and prescribing the manner of taking the census of this City." the ordinance was read the first time, on motion the rules were suspended the ordinance read the second time, on motion the rules were further suspended the ordinance read the third time and passed by the following vote: Yeas – Ald. Boardman, Brueggerhoff, Christian, Dohme, Heitz, Mitchell, Robinson, and Todd. Nays: none. On motion the Council adjourned to their regular monthly meeting. Fred S. Gerzing Recorder. Report from the judges of Election held on the 16th of March 1874. for Chief Engineer Asst. Chief and Recorder of the fire Department was read, showing the election of Joe. Nagle as Chief Engineer. A. Ziller as Asst. Chief Engineer and Iff H. Robinson as Recorder. On motion the report was confirmed and the Mayor requested to commission said Officers elect. Report of City Marshal, for the Month of March 1874, was read, and received. Report of his Honor the Mayor from the 20th of October 1873 to the first of April 1874, was read and received. On motion of Ald. Bremond the report was ordered to be published. Report of City Sexton, for the Month of March 1874 was read received, and referred to Cemetery Committee. Petition of City Sexton asking for an accurate survey of the Cemetery including all lots and single graves and to have them regularly numbered so as to correspond with the book of Record of lots, was read, and referred to Cemetery Committee. The following communication was presented and read. Towit: To his Honor the Mayor & City Council of the City of Austin Gentlemen Under instructions of the committee of arrangements of the Austin Fire Department, you are respectfully invited and requested to participate in our annual parade on the 21st day of April, to celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto. Parade will take place at 2 o'clock, & programme will be out in due time. Very respectfully, W. H. Brueggerhoff, of Washington No 1 Ed. Bodkin, of Colorado No 2 Wm H. Archer. of Hook & Ladder No 1. Brueggerhoff, as chairman of Fire Committee, reported that he had purchased from Silsby House manufacturing Co. 500 feet of rubber hose, to be paid nine ty days after shipment. Report received. Street Committee reported, on petition of J. W. Wayman & Co. and many others doing business on block 69, asking that vehicles be not allowed to stand in front of said block; Stated that there was an ordinance regulating the same. Ald. Brueggerhoff offered the following resolution, which was unanimously adopted; to wit: Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin, that the Mayor be and is hereby authorized to issue to Loomis & Christian Austin City ten year bonds, bearing ten per cent interest, for sundry approved accounts against this City, and ten per cent be allowed them, from the time said accounts were due. Ald. Brueggerhoff moved to adjourn to Monday evening, and that no business be transacted at the meeting except the passing of ordinances, Carried Fred Sleeging Recorder. We would respectfully state, that ten days notice was made of the meeting of the Court, as required by ordinance, and that there was no complaints filed.
