Austin Approves New Steam Fire Engine Purchase
• Fire Engine Purchase Approved – City Council voted unanimously to buy a Silsby 4th Size Rotary Steam Fire Engine, complete with hose reel and equipment, to modernize the fire department.
• Alderman Resignation – H.H. Metz resigned from his position on the council, creating a vacancy that needed to be filled.
• Special Election Ordered – The Mayor was authorized to hold an election to fill Metz's vacant First Ward alderman seat, with power to appoint election judges and clerks.

Called meeting of City Council, Austin Tex. Jan. 6th 1874.
Mayor T. B. Wheeler in the chair. Aldermen present G T Boardman, C. Bremond, Wm Bruggierhoff, Ed. Christian, F. Dohme, N.B. Mitche- J. H. Robinson. Aldermen absent H. H. Metz and S. H. Todd.
The Mayor said that the meeting was called to receive the report from the Fire Committee with regard the purchase of another Fire Engine Fire Committee reported, and recommend the purchase of one of Silsby's 4th Size Rotary — Steam Fire Engines. The report was received and adopted.
It was moved that the Mayor be authorized to purchase from the Silsby's Manufacturing Co. one 4th Size Rotary Steam Fire Engine one Hose Reel, and all other apparatus belonging to said Engine according to proposition of Silsby's Manufg. Co. by S. McDowall Agt. The yeas and nays being called, the motion was sustained by the following vote: Yeas — G T Boardman, C. Bremond, Wm Brueggkhoff, Ed. Christian, F. Dohme, N. B. Mitchell and J. H. Robinson. Nays — none. Resignation of Alderman H. H. Metz was read and accepted. It was then on motion resolved that the Mayor be authorized to order an election in conformity with the Charter and ordinances of this city for an Alderman in the first ward and also he be authorized to appoint such parties to act as judges & clerks of said election as he may see proper.
