Stated Meeting of City Council Austin City, April 8th 1875
Mayor J. B. Weeler in the chair. Present - Aldermen S. S. Boardman C. Bremond C.H. Cullen, S. Dohme N. B. Mitchell, J. H. Robinson and S. H. Ford. Absent: Holbren. Wm Brueggerhoff. Ed. Christian and S. Piper. The minutes from November 2nd to December 23. 1874 were read and adopted. Petition from G. B. Smith, asking for the privilege to open a bar room in Ward 10. was read and granted. A petition from Cunningham & Thompson was read, asking to be released from the payment of license tax on their ferries, on account heavy expenses in keeping Bowie street in a good condition, and various other reasons. On motion, the same was referred to the Street Committee, to report back at next meeting. A petition from Job. Smith was read, asking to be refunded the amount of $350. in who- le or part for a license paid by him on a "Jift Enterprise" stating that he had only worke fourteen days under said license, on account of him closing said occupation by order of the District Court. the Mayor be authorized to settle the matter with Mr. Job Smith on reasonable terms Lost. Ald. Boardman then moved to reconsider. Carried. On motion of Ald. Robinson further action on the petition was then deferred to next meeting. A petition from B Radley and associates was read, praying for the passage of an ordinance giving them the right to erect hydrants and to put down and lay mains, pipes etc in any of the streets, lanes alleys or commons within the corporate limits of the city. with a view of supplying the citizens with an abundance of good pure and wholsom water for all purposes, and also the city itself upon the most reasonable terms, the price of water to citizens not to exceed five cents per barrel, perhaps not that much. On motion, the petition was referred to a special committee consisting of Aldermen Bremond, Robinson and Dohme. A petition from Ed. Wilkerson was read, asking to be refunded the amount of $32. paid to a former city Sexton, Alex Eanes, for a cemetery lot for which he had not received a deed. On motion, the petition was referred to the Cemetery Committee to investigate the matter. A petition from C. Peterson was read, asking the privilege to operate a bar room in Ward 9. Granted. Alder. Cullen offered the following resolution: Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin. That an appropriation of seventy five dollars or so much thereof as may be necessary, be made out of any money not otherwise appropriated, to pay G.L. Crops back his money with interest, upon and for a certain cemetery lot which the city had previously sold to another party. Sains. Carried unanimously. On motion of Ald. Robinson, the Mayor was authorized to advertise for proposals for the building of a stone bridge on College Avenue over shoal creek. Report of City Marshall for the month of March 1875 was read and received. Report of City Physician, for the month of March, 1875 was read and received. An ordinance to amend article (449) of the city code was introduced and referred to the Fire Committee, to make report at next meeting. Ald. Boardman introduced the following resolution, which was unanimously adopted, towit: Be it resolved by the City Council of the city of Austin, That the city Marshal be instructed to sell to the highest bidder, on the first day of May of each year, the vegetable and other stands by the Market House; such stand to consist of a front of nine feet and that all persons selling any articles around or in the Market House during market hours, who have no rented stands shall pay to the Market Master for such privilege twentyfive (25) cents per day, and that the proceeds aris- ing from said rents, shall be appropriated and expressly retained by the City Treasurer, for the purpose of erecting a covered way over said grounds. Taylor was read making objecting to the raising of two pieces of his property, towit: 2 lots in block 37. Div. C. and the improvements thereon, and block 44. Div. O. On motion the appeal was laid on the table. An appeal from John Witteman was read objecting to the raising of his lot 8 in block 55. Div. C. — showing cause by an exhibit of the amount of cost on same and asked that the assessment remain at the $900. as rendered by him. Granted. Ald. Dublin made a verbal explanation with reference to J. C. Raymonds 4 acres in block 1 Div. Y. — said that said ground was defective and if he had known the same he would not have raised said property, he moved that the assessment remain as rendered. Carried. Ald. Cullen moved that the Court of Appeals adjourn sine die and that the president certify to the assessment as adjusted, and deliver it to the Mayor. Carried.
