Called Meeting of the City Council Council Chamber. Austin Tex. Feb. 18 /76 Mayor J. B. Wheeler in the chair. Present: Aldermen J. W. Chandler, J. H. Cook Jr. J.A. Diffenbaugh, J. C. Goodale, W. A. James, J. H. Robinson David Sheets, [illegible]. Absent: Aldermen C. Bremond and Larmour Ald. Sheets offered the following resolution: Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin, That the Market limits be reduced one block on the east, west, north and southeast. Ald. Chandler offered an ordinance relative to Markets. Ald. Sheets moved to amend article one by striking out "quantities not less than a quarter and insert "or any part thereof." Lost, the by Mayor voting in the negative. On motion the ordinance was referred to the Committee on Ordinances. On Motion the Council adjourned to Monday evening, Feb. 21st /76 7 o'clock P. M. Wheeler in the chair. Present: Aldermen F. W. Chandler, A. H. Cook, J. H. Deffenbaugh, F. O. Goodale, D. H. James, H. J. Robinson and M. A. Taylor. Absent: Aldermen E. Bremond, J. Larmour and David Sheeks. Petitions read Received and disposed of. Petition of Mrs. S. A. Henry, stating that she had been long accustomed to nursing and caring for the sick; that she had some experience in Northern hospitals and had superintended rooms occupied by the sick and afflicted, etc., asking in view of these facts that the old court building be converted into a hospital, county authorities if need be, assenting, and she be made superintendent of the same, etc. Referred to Committee on Charity to report at the next meeting. Petition of H. D. Miller, praying for a license to issue, as a broker, for fifty dollars per annum. Referred Committee on Ordi- nances. Petition of Mrs. Lucinda Raymond, stat- ing that she is the owner of a life estate in the west half of block No. 7, division D. and also of six lots off the east half of said block; That she had paid the city taxes thereon for a number of years; That the officers of the city were now demanding payment of twenty three dollars for the tax of 1876; that the street crossing at the south-west corner of College Hill is greatly out of repair, and in need of grading and draining, there being no ditches or drains to carry the water from said crossing, but is so depressed below the surrounding land as to collect the water and become a deep mud whole almost impassable for wheeled vehicles, causing great inconvenience to the public and especially to petitioner; asks leave to expend the amount claimed from her --- Page break --- 82 as taxes due the city, or so much thereof as may be necessary, in the repairs of said street and roping, and be credited on the tax rolls for the amount so expended, after the work has been received and approved by the city Engineer. Referred to the Committee on Streets. Petition of Watt Good, asking for a license to issue, for the sale of spirituous and malt liquors in quantities less than one quart, in Ward No 2. Granted. Petition of A. Bonolli & Co., asking for a license to issue, to sell spirituous and malt liquors in quantities less than one quart in ward No 1. Referred to a special committee consisting of Aldermen Chandler James and Taylor, to investigate the character and standing of the signers on said petition. Aldermen Chandler, Taylor and James were appointed a select committee to confer with Mr. Geo. Hancock with reference to the building erected by the Bridge Company on the River Walk, back of Mr. Geo. Hancocks property. An Ordinance No 72, entitled "An Ordi- nance regulating the renting of Market Stalls, Market Privileges, and Coffee Stands, for the year ending March 1st 1877" was introduced, and read. On motion the rules were suspended; the Ordinance read the second time. On motion, the rules were further suspended, the Ordinance read the third time and passed by the following vote, Yeas— Aldermen Chandler, Cook Jr. Diffenbaugh, Goodale, James, Robinson and Taylor.
