Called Meeting of City Council Council Chamber June 23, 1876 Council called to order at 1.10 oclock P.M. Mayor Wheeler in the chair Roll called and the following members answered Aldermen Bremond, Chandler, Cook, Diffenbaugh, Goodale, James, Robinson, Shutes and Taylor Absent Alderman Lorimer, Quorum present The Mayor informed the council that as the Board had granted him a leave of absence he should take advantage of it and leave the city on the evening train The estimate for the current expenses of the city government as presented by the Finance committee was taken up and discussed, but no definite action taken. By Alderman Shutes. Resolved that the committee on ordinances be and they are hereby instructed to prepare an ordinance providing for Appropriations in accordance with the report of the Committee on Finance made at the last meeting of this Board - for the consideration of the Council at the next meeting. Carried By Alderman Shutes, An ordinance entitled an ordinance #50 Creating the Office of City Clerk and authorizing the mayor to present the name of some person to the council to fill said office The ordinance was read the first time. On motion the rules was suspended and the Ordinance was read the second time. On motion the rules was suspended further and the Ordinance was read the third time and put on its final passage The ordinance passed by the following vote Yeas Aldermen Bremond, Chandler, Cook, Diffenbaugh, Goodale, James, Robinson, Shutes and Taylor. Nays None The Mayor appointed John F Herbert to the office of City Clerk, which appointment was confirmed by the following vote Yeas Five (5) Nays Four (4)

respectfully report, that they have been informed by the Mayor that he can arrange with with the Washington Fire Company and Hope Hook & Ladder Company to occupy the room now occupied by the Mayor and, as a Council Chamber, and respectfully request that the Fire Committee be authorized to to fit up said room for said Companies, and that a Committee be appointed to make suitable arrangements for the Mayor and other Officers at the Hall over the City Market House

On Motion of Alderman Robinson the account was returned to Mr. Cunningham for itemization
John T. Herbert tendered his resignation as Deputy City Marshal, which was accepted
