Austin Tax Collection & City Hall Move 1876

Tuesday, June 27, 1876 special called

Tax ordinances passed unanimously – The council swiftly approved two tax-related measures: one establishing the process for collecting taxes and another levying taxes for 1876, though two aldermen (Goodale and Taylor) opposed the second measure.

City hall consolidation approved – Most city offices were ordered to relocate to the new City Hall building once it was ready, streamlining government operations in one location.

Citizen petitions addressed – The council handled requests including assistance for a woman needing travel funds to Missouri, release from a liquor dealer's bond, and continued contract negotiations for street lamp maintenance.

Financial oversight requested – The city clerk was instructed to prepare a comprehensive report on the city's debt, outstanding warrants, and budgetary needs for the next meeting.
