Called Meeting of City Council Council Chamber August 21, 1876
Council called to order at 12.25 P.M. J. W. Chandler President of Board of Alderman in the Chair Roll called and the following members answered Aldermen. Desmond. Cook. Diffenbaugh. Jemms. Robinson and Taylor. Absent Aldermen Goodale, Garmon and Clarke Quorum present. The President informed the council that he had called them together for the purpose of informing them that the tower of the Fire Alarm Bell was in a dangerous condition and immediate action was necessary, either the bell should be removed or the tower repaired. Whereupon Alderman Taylor introduced the following Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin That the Committee on Fire Department together with the City Engineer be instructed to inspect the old Fire Alarm Bell tower and ascertain if it can be repaired and if so, what will be the cost of the necessary repairs. Also to procure an estimate of the cost of removing the Fire Alarm Bell from its present fixtures and place the same on the City Market House. Carried The following proposals for Flooring Bridges at intersection of Congress Avenue and Pecan Street and at intersection of Congress Avenue and Bois d'Arc Street (3 Bridges) in compliance with a resolution passed August 9th 1876 was received and read #1 P. # 2 Calvin H Cutter $490.00 in City Warrants On Motion of Alderman Taylor the Contract was award -ed to Calvin H Cutter Alderman James presented the account of Joseph Smith for Making and hanging Eight Window Shades in Mayors Court room an Office, amounting to $40.00 which amount exceeded the appropriation $15.22. On Motion of Alderman Diffenbaugh the account was approved and ordered paid Petition of Watt Goode. Stating that on the 15th day of May 1876, he paid to the City Assessor the sum of $62.50 for License for the sale of Spiritous Liquors in quantities less than one Quart from the said 15th day of May to the 15th day of August 1876. That the present State Constitution prohibits the City from levying more than one half the amount levied by the State for like occupation. That said Constitution went into effect on the 18th day of April 1876 and previous to the time of his Taking out said license. And asks that the amount in excess of the legal tax be refunded. On Motion of Alderman Cook the petition was granted and the Mayor was authorized to draw his warrant on the City Treasurer in favor of Watt Goode for such amount as paid in excess of the legal tax By Alderman Robinson. An Ordinance " prohibiting certain Licensed Vehicles from Standing on Congress Avenue between Pine and Hickory Streets while such Vehicles are awaiting employment The Ordinance was read and passed to its second reading by the following vote Yeas Alderman Dremond, Cook, Diffenbaugh, Janus, Robinson Cook and Mr President. Nays None Alderman Cook Moved to suspend the rules and place the ordinance on its second reading. Carried by the folowing vote.
