Austin Mill Lease & Ward 10 Election Results 1877

Thursday, April 26, 1877 special called

New Alderman Elected: Louis Maas won the Ward 10 alderman election with 43 votes, defeating two other candidates, and was sworn in during the meeting.

Mill Property Development: J.D. Boudenant requested to lease the old mill property for manufacturing purposes; the council approved sending the petition to a three-person committee (including the Mayor) to review and decide on the lease terms.

Butcher License Relief: A petition from butchers Trunk sought exemption from paying business licenses; the council referred this to the Mayor and Market House Committee for decision.

Legal Representation: The council hired the law firm Hancock & [illegible] to represent the city's interests in pending district court cases.

244 Called Meeting of City Council April 26, 1877 Council called to order at 3.45 P.M. Mayor Wheeler in the chair Roll called and the following members answered Aldermen Bremond Cook Doffenbaugh James Lorman Robinson and Park Absent Alderman Taylor. Quorum present The Mayor informed the council that he had called them together for the purpose of laying before them a petition from J D. Boudenant who was desirous of leasing the old Mill property for manufacturing purposes. Also to open the returns of the judges of the Election held in ward No 10 on the 20 ult for Alderman in said Ward. The following is the Election Returns Returns of an Election held in accordance with the Proclamation of the Mayor of the City of Austin Travis County Texas this 20th day of April 1877, for Alderman of the 10th Ward Louis Maas 43 Clabe Cautains 14 John Condow 1 We the undersigned managers of Elections of Ward No 10, do hereby certify that the above is a correct returns of Elections for Alderman of 10th Ward County of Travis held at Austin in said county on the 20th day of April 1877 E.D. Walker Judge Jos Condow Clerk G.W. Ashley Judge Louis Maas Alderman elect from Ward No 10 being present, the Mayor administered to him the oath of office and he qualified and took his seat Petition of J D. Boudenant for lease of old mill property was read Alderman Cook moved that the petition be granted Alderman Bremond moved to amend the motion of Alderman Cook by referring the petition to a committee of two in connection with the Mayor with power to act The amendment was accepted Alderman Taylor came in and took his seat and was recorded present The petition was read for the information of --- Page break --- Alderman Taylor The Yeas and Nay ordered and the motion as amended Carried by the following vote Yeas Aldermen Bremond, Cook, Daffenbaugh Jaynes, Larimore, Robinson, Rock Taylor and Mead Nays None The Mayor appointed Aldermen Robinson and Cook on the Committee On motion of Alderman Bremond Alderman Taylor was added to the Committee Petitions of Trunk and to be relieved from payment of License as Butchers from to On motion of Alderman Bremond the petition was referred to the Mayor and Market House Committee with power to act (found unanimously Yeas & nays called) Alderman Bremond moved that Hancock & [illegible] be engaged to attend to the interest of the city in certain cases now pending in the District Courts where the city of Austin is a party Carried Petition of N S Rocon for reduction in Tax Assessed on certain property for the year 1890 Alderman Bremond moved that the petition be referred to a Committee consisting of the Mayor, Alderman Daffenbaugh and Jaynes with power to act Carried The Mayor appointed Alderman Mead on the Finance, Police and Cemetery Committee On Motion of Alderman [illegible] the Council adjourned Approved June 8th 1891 John S.
