Called Meeting of City Council November 10th 1897 Council called to order at 4.30 P.M. Mayor De Shew in the chair Roll called & the following members answered. Aldermen Bremond. James Maas Robinson Taylor. Ward & Withers Absent. Aldermen. Cook, Doffenbaugh & Larmour. Quorum present. The Journals of the Meetings of Oct 12 & 15 & 27 were read and approved. The Mayor stated that he had called the Council together in compliance with article no. 116 of the City Ordinances & to transact such other business as may be presented. The City Attorney submitted a detailed report of the Official business he had attended to during the month. also regarding the garnishment in case of Walton & Shelley. On motion of Alderman Ward the report was read, and adopted Petition of Erwin & Jones asking that their lease from the City for the old Miller property be extended to 25 years. On motion of Alderman Ward the petition was referred to the incoming administrators

The special committee appointed to investigate as to who was responsible for the neglect in allowing Walton & Shelley to obtain a judgement against the City, reported that they had been unable to obtain any other facts than had been reported by the [illegible] Attorney as asked to be discharged On motion of Alderman Robinson the Committee was discharged The Mayor stated that it was the duty of Council to open the returns of the election for City offices which was held on Monday Nov 5, 1877, and appointed Alderman Robinson Maas and Ward as tellers [illegible] McCullough by attorney gave written notice that he would contest the election as Alderman from Ward No 8. The tellers appointed to examine the election returns proceeded in presence of the Council and opened and examined the returns from each of the wards in the City and after consolidating all the returns they reported the following persons as elected they having received the lawful number of votes. Adjourned Meeting of the City Council Austin Texas Nov. 12th 77.
The council was called to order at 8 p.m. Mayor DeGuss in the chair. Roll called and the [illegible] members answered Alderman Bremond, James, Maas, Robinson, Taylor, [illegible] Withers, and Hard Absent.- Aldermen Cook Diffenbaugh & Larmour. [illegible] Quorum present The journal of last meeting was read and approved His honor the Mayor delivered an address to the council, giving in detail the financial condition of the city and thanking the members of the board for their uniform kindness to him during their connection with the city government and the faithful manner they have discharged their duty. There being no further business before the council Alderman Taylor moved that the council adjourn sine die. Carried. The oath of office was then administered by C. De Normandie Esq. to the Hon. J. C. DeGuss Mayor elect who upon being qualified took his seat and administered the oath of office to the following offices elect. J. H. Howard City Treasurer S. N. Wildy City Attorney Ed. Absent none, Durrane present. James McCullough by attorney presented a petition setting forth that G. F. Hand, Alderman from Ward No 8 was ineligible to the office of Alderman, and asked that a committee be appointed with power to send for persons and papers to investigate and report. The petition was read Alderman Miles moved that the petition be laid on the table. Carried Petition of Dniskle, Day & Ford, R. H. Smith J. J. & H. H. Tobin and other merchants asking that the Insurance Oil Tank Company be allowed to use and occupy the stone building known as the Emmon & Noble building as a store house. On motion of Alderman Miles the petition was received and referred to the Committee on Fire Department. A communication from the Austin Board of Trade stating that an excursion party consisting of merchants, bankers, manufacturers and capitalists from Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois Indiana and Michigan will visit this city about the 18th of next month and requesting the co-operation of the city authorities in tendering them a reception. Alderman Miles moved that the communication be received and referred to a special committee. Carried Aldermans Miles, Hales, and Crooker, were appointed on the committee The Mayor presented the name of R. H. L. Bitt for confirmation as City Physician. Aldermen Crow, and Platt were appointed as tellers who after receiving the ballot reported the following: for Confirmation 6, against confirmation 4, confirmed as City Physician The Mayor presented the name of C. L. Nitschke for confirmation as City Sexton. Alderman Crow, and Platt were appointed Tellers who after receiving the ballots reported the following: for confirmation 5 against confirmation 5. The Mayor cast his vote in the affirmative and C. L. Nitschke was confirmed as City Sexton.

Alderman Crow received 7 votes and alderman Miller received 3 votes Alderman Crow was declared elected President of the Board of Aldermen. On motion of Alderman Crooker the council adjourned
