Multiple Butcher Shop Petitions: Four business owners (including the Thiele brothers and John Stolzinger) requested permission to sell butcher meat outside the city market limits.

434 Called Meeting of City Council February 23, 1878 Council called to order at 7.45 P.M. Mayor De Gress in the chair Roll called and the following Members answered, Aldermen Crow, Crocker Markley and Strong Absent. Aldermen Miller Millett, Metz, Halle Platt and Sheehan Alderman Crocker moved a call of the Council call sustained and the Marshal was directed to bring in the absentees Alderman Metz came in and answered On Motion of Alderman Crow, the call of the Council was suspended On motion of Alderman Crow the Council adjourned Approved April 1st 1878 [signature] Robert S. Mayor De Gress in the Chair Roll called and the following Members answered Aldermen Crow, Halle and Sheehan Absent. Aldermen Crocker, Miller, Millett, Markley Metz and Strong Alderman Halle, moved a call of the Council Call sustained and the Marshal was directed to bring in the absentees. Aldermen, Crocker, Strong, Metz and Platt came in and answered. Quorum present On Motion of Alderman Crocker the call of the Council was suspended. His Honor the Mayor stated that he had --- Page break --- 435 called them together for the purpose of laying before them certain Ordinances and Petitions which required their Action Alderman Millett came in and answered Petition of George S Hume for permission to establish a Wood Yard on South West corner of Congress Avenue and Cedar StreetOn Motion of Alderman Crocker the Petition was received and granted Petition of S.H. Carrice Austin February 22 1878 Hon J.C. Aldren Mayor and the City Council Gents I being the lowest bidder on the Chestnut Street bridge desire the Warrant for $200.00 be issued to the Finance Committee, and they being instructed to sell the same before the first day of March to the highest bidder. I desire to get all I can for the warrant and believe that it is worth more now than it will be after March 1st 1878. The Finance Committee holding the money until the bridge is finished Yours with respect S.H. Carrice On Motion of Alderman Strong the Petition was received and granted and the Mayor authorized to draw his warrant for the same By Alderman Kralle, Resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin I That the Mayor be and he is hereby authorized to draw his Warrant for $1200.00 the amount appropriated for the repairing of the Pecan Street Bridge over Waller Creek, and the Construction of the Iron Bridge over Waller Creek on Cedar Street. II That the Finance Committee be and they are hereby authorized to sell the Warrant authorized to be issued under the first section of this Resolution to the best interest of the City and deposit the same with the City Treasurer subject to the order of the Mayor to pay for the above mentioned improvements when the same are accepted by the Street Committee and City Engineer On Motion of Alderman Crocker the Resolution was adopted --- Page break --- 436 Alderman Crow, moved that the Ordinance Relating to Dogs which was passed February 16th 1878 be referred reconsidered. The Yeas and Nays ordered and the Motion was lost by the following vote Yeas Aldermen Crow. and Metz Nays Aldermen Crooker, Millett Nalle. Platt Sheehan and Strong An Ordinance Exempting certain Industries or Manufactories Erected or Carried on in the City of Austin from City Taxes for Five Years. which passed its first reading February 13th 1878 was taken up and read the second time On Motion of Alderman Nalle the Ordinance was referred to the Ordinance Committee and City Attorney By Committee on Codifying and Digesting the City Ordinances. An Ordinance Regulating Fire Dept re On Motion of Alderman Nalle Action was postponed By Ordinance Committee. An Ordinance Levying a License Tax on Retailers of Butchers Meat. The Ordinance was read Alderman Platt moved to lay the Ordinance on the table Motion lost. Alderman Crooker moved to refer the Ordinance to the Ordinance Committee. The Vote being a tie His Hon the Mayor cast his vote in the negative and the motion to refer was lost Alderman Millett moved to suspend the rules and put the Ordinance on its second reading The Yeas and Nays ordered and the Motion to suspend the rules was lost by the following vote Yeas Aldermen. Crow. Millett Metz and Sheehan Nays Aldermen Crooker. Nalle. Platt and Strong On Motion of Alderman Millett the Council Adjourned to 7.30 P.M. Aldermen Brooker and Meltett were the only Members present and after waiting some time they left without transacting any business John F. Call sustained and the Marshal was directed to bring in the absentees. Alderman Platt came in and answered Quorum present. On motion of Alderman Miller the call of the council was suspended. Alderman Mertz came in and answered His Honor the Mayor stated that he had called them together for the purpose of submitting to them for their action certain Ordinances and Petitions The following Petitions for permission to sell Butchers meat outside of the Market limits Charles Thiele on Corner of Colorado and Cherry Streets William Thiele on Corner of Pecan and Rio River Street John Stolzinger on Mesquit Street East of the City Market limits Henry Dresdinger on Corner of Linden and Sanyacinto Street.
