Called meeting of City Council Austin Texas June 06, 1878. Mayor De Gress presiding. Roll Called. Present Aldermen Brown, Millett, Metz, Farry, Sheehan, Strong and Vaughan 7. Quorum Present
The following business was transacted. Petition of C. P. Naigler to run a meat market on the corner of Pecan Street and West Avenue. Read and Granted. Proposal of Hugh Chalmers to lease the River Front from the West boundary line of the City to the mouth of Shoal Creek. On motion the Mayor was authorized to advertise for the lease of said river front and to lease the same to the highest bidder. His Honor the Mayor submitted the following:
Mayor's Office Austin Texas June 5th 1878. To the Hon. Board of Aldermen, of the City of Austin. Gentlemen: In compliance with directions contained in your resolutions passed June 4th 1878, I have the honor to state that Colonel Jno. D. Elliott received $1500.00 in warrants for printing as public printer of the City of Austin. As it is claimed that this contract was for United States currency, the differ- ence between that amount, taking the discount at fifteen cents on the dollar, is $233.04 to which he is entitled according to his showing. 74 and 79 have the honor to make the follow-ing report. We recommend the construction of a stone bridge twenty five feet across the road bed and two feet high. We also recommend an appropriation of five hundred dollars for the construction of the bridge and the grading of the street or as much thereof as will be required. [illegible] An Ordinance in relation to alleys. By Alderman Vaughan. An Ordinance fixing the compensation of Aldermen of the City of Austin. Read first time and motion to suspend the rules to place the Ordinance on its second reading lost, two thirds of a full Council not voting in the affirmative. An Ordinance regulating the salaries of Officers. Read first time and on motion referred back to Ordinance committee. Resolution authorizing the Mayor to advertise for proposals for the building of a rock bridge on West Bois d Arc. Street On motion the resolution was adopted. Resolution that the ordinances as codified be printed in book form and that bids be advertised for, for the printing and binding of 200 and 300 copies. An invitation was presented from Rev. Mr. Gluck, Jewish Rabbi, inviting the Mayor and Board of Aldermen to attend the confirmation ceremonies to be held at Odd Fellows Hall at 9 a. m. present inst.
