Austin's 1878 Clock Repair and Bridge Plans

City Clock Contract: The council approved a $50 annual contract with B.C. Mills to maintain and repair Austin's public clock, deciding to keep it in its current location.

Infrastructure Projects: The City Engineer's proposals for building a foot bridge over Waller Creek on Red River Street and paving East Pecan Street were referred to the Street Committee for further review.

Public Safety Initiative: Citizens were officially encouraged to report sanitary code violations and public nuisances directly to the City Marshal to improve neighborhood conditions.

563 Called meeting City Council August 12, 1878. Mayor De Grast Presiding. Roll Called. [illegible] present Aldermen Crow, Croaker, Platt, Clanu, Shubau, Strong and Vaughan. A Quorum present. The following business was transacted. The report of the meeting of citizens held on Saturday last, as published in the Statesman of the 11th inst. was read and on motion was adopted as a rule for the guidance of the City Council and authorities. The report of the City Engineer relative to the bids for building a foot bridge over Waller Creek on Red River Street & for curbing and paving on East Pecan St. was referred to the Street Committee. A resolution was adopted requesting all citizens to report promptly to the City Marshal any nuisance or violation of the Sanitary ordinances coming within their knowledge. The Market House Committee submitted the following report which was adapted: Austin Aug. 12. 1898 To the Hon. Mayor and Board of Aldermen. Your Committee to whom was referred the petition of B. C. Mills relative to his contract with the City in reference to the city clock, respectfully recommend that the city clock be retained in its present position and that the Mayor be authorized to enter into a contract with B. C. Mills to keep said clock in thorough repair for one year for the sum of fifty dollars (Signed) V. E. Vaughan E. Ranes. A. Platt.
