Austin Invites Mexican Military Leaders to Visit

Monday, December 30, 1878 special called

• Austin City Council unanimously approved an invitation for General Cogt (commanding U.S. Department of Texas) and General Trevino (commanding Mexican forces on the Rio Grande) to visit the city

• Mayor De Gress was authorized to telegraph both military leaders with the invitation

• If accepted, the Mayor was empowered to appoint a five-person committee to escort the visiting generals to Austin

• This diplomatic gesture reflected post-Civil War efforts to maintain peaceful relations between U.S. and Mexican military forces along the Texas border

617 Called Meeting of City Council Austin Texas December 30, 1878 Mayor De Gress presiding Present Aldermen Ergot, Brooker, Mil- lett, Metz, Fann and Strong. 6. Quorum present The object of the Call being stated by the Mayor the following resolution was introduced and unanimously adopted. Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin, That the Mayor be and he is hereby authorized to telegraph to Genl Cogt Commanding the department of Texas to Genl Trevino commanding the Mexican forces on the Rio Grande, Mexico, inviting them and their party to visit the City of Austin; and if they accept this invitation, that the Mayor is further authorized to appoint a Committee of five to escort them to this city.
