Austin Sets 1879 Tax Rate and Liquor License

Tax Rate Approved: City council unanimously passed an ordinance setting the property tax rate at nine-tenths of one percent for 1879.

Liquor License Granted: Joseph Amon received approval for a retail liquor license after petitioning the council.

Property Tax Appeal Denied: The council rejected a resident's request to lower her property assessment, ruling they had no authority to override the board of appraisers' decisions.

Ordinance Amendment Passed: An amendment to Article 344 of the city's revised ordinances was unanimously approved through all three required readings.

664 Called Meeting of City Council Austin, Tex. June 12, 1879 Mayor De Gress presiding. Roll called. Present Alderman. Crov- Crooke, Millett, Platt, Raven Strung, Vaughn, The following business was transacted: An ordinance amending article 344 (1) of the Revised Ordinances of the City of Austin. Read first time and on motion the rules were suspended and the ordinance -ment placed on its second reading by the following vote: Yeas Crov, Crooke, Millett Platt, Raven, Strung, Vaughn. Yeas 7. Nays- none- Read second time, and on motion the ordinance amendment was placed on its third reading by the following vote: Yeas Crov, Crooke Millett, Platt, Raven, Strung, Vaughn Yeas- Seven- Nays- None- Ordinance Amendment read third time and on motion passed by the following vote: Yeas Crov, Crooke, Millett, Platt, Raven, Strung, Vaughn. Yeas: Seven. Nays. none. Petition of Joseph Amon for a retail liquor license. Granted. Petition of Mrs. I.E. Sullis for a reduction in the assessment of her property for the year 1878. On motion, the petition was laid on the table on the ground that the city council had no authority to revise the action of the board of appraising and equalization. An ordinance fixing the per centum of ad-valorem tax for the year A.D. 1879. Read first time, and on motion the rules were suspended and the ordinance placed on its second reading by the following vote.
