Austin Elects New City Marshal

Called Meeting Austin Texas, December 28, 1880 Mayor L M Crooker, presiding. Roll Called. Present - Aldermen Mels Platt, Robertson, Reichman Sheehan and Tobin. Absent - Aldermen Boardman, Duff, Nalle and Fohrenbeyer. Quorum present. Minutes of regular meeting December 6th 1885 read and approved. The mayor stated that he had called the council together for the purpose of canvassing the returns of election held for city marshal on Friday December 17th 1885. Aldermen Platt Reichman and Mels were appointed tellers, the vote being counted the following was declared the result. Ben Thompson 849, John Reely 621, John Hassell 11 John Oehler 187. R. Brown 28. Wm Thompson having received the highest vote was declared elected city marshal of the city of Austin. Approved Jany 8th 1886 There being no further business the council adjourned. C B. An ordinance granting The United States government the right to con- struct a sewer in The City of Austin Ordinance was read First - Alderman Tobin offered as a substitute. An ordinance granting The United States government The authority of the State of Texas, to connect its sewer and such citizens of the City of Austin as may desire to tap said underground sewer in The City of Austin. Carried. On motion The rules were sus- pended and the ordinance placed on its second reading by The following vote. Yeas - Alderman Boardman, Duff Melty Platt, Sheehan, Tobin and Wahrenberger. Nays - None - Ordinance read the second time. Alderman Boardman moved that the rules be suspended and that the ordinance be placed on its Third reading. Lost by the following vote. Yeas - Alderman Boardman, Duff Platt Sheehan Tobin and Wahrenberger. Nays Alderman Melty. A petition of city engineer D. H. Daskins, asking for a leave of absence for thirty days. On motion of Alderman Tobin the petition was granted. On motion the council adjourned. C. B. Connell City Clerk.
