168 An ordinance granting The United States government the right to con- struct a sewer in the city of Austin Ordinance read second time. Alderman Tobin offered as a substitute. An ordinance granting The United States government the authority of The City of Austin to construct a main and trunk sewer in The City of Austin as may seem to pay (an) under ground sewer in The City of Austin. Carried. On motion the rules were sus- pended and the ordinance placed on the second reading by the following vote. Yeas - Alderman Boardman, Duff Mety, Platt, Sheehan, Tobin and Wahrenberger. Nays - None. Ordinance read the second time. Alderman Boardman moved that The rules be suspended and that The ordinance be placed on its third reading. Lost by the following vote. Yeas - Alderman Boardman, Duff Platt, Sheehan, Tobin and Wahrenberger. Nays - Alderman Metty. A petition of city engineer D. H. Harkine, asking for a leave of absence for thirty days. On motion of Alderman Tobin the petition was granted. On motion The Council adjourned. E. B. Comnell City Clerk. Called Meeting of city Council, Austin, Texas, Dec 27th 1888 Mayor L. M. Crooker, presiding. Roll called - Present - Alderman Boardman Mety, Platt, Sheehan and Wahrenberger. Absent - Alderman Duff, Ralle, Tobin. --- Page break --- 169 and Lotin: There being no quorum present Alderman Thahrenberger moved a call of the council which being duly seconded. The Marshal was dispatched for the absent Aldermen. Aldermen Duff and Robertson took their seats and answered to their named On motion of Alderman Sheehan The call was suspended. The mayor stated he had called the council together to take final action taken on the same ordinance Ordinance read Third time. Alderman Robertson moved to reconsider each vote so as to allow amendments to be offered. Carried. Alderman Thahrenberger moved to amend by inserting "capacity" in place of "size", where ordinance reads: "that no connecting pipe shall be more than one-fifth of the size of the main sewer". Carried. Alderman Thahrenberger moved to amend by inserting "twelve inches" in place of "ten inches", where the ordinance reads "which capacity is ten-inch pipe" or "minimum of ten inches". Carried. Ordinance read Third time and on motion, the ordinance passed by the following vote: Ayes - Aldermen Brannum, Duff Platt, Robertson, Sheehan and Thahrenberger. Nays - Alderman Wiley. The Mayor nominated Mr. John Bennett to fill the vacancy on the police force. Alderman Wiley moved that he be elected by acclimation. Carried. There being no further business The Council adjourned.
