Austin's 1881 Meat Markets and Fire Engine Sale

Meat market expansion: The council approved two petitions to open outside meat markets from J.D. Connell and W.D. Milliemes, expanding food retail options in the city.

Fire engine modernization: After the city installed fire hydrants, a resolution was introduced to sell the Colorado steam fire engine No. 2, which had become redundant and cost about $2,500 annually to maintain.

Infrastructure improvements: The Street Committee recommended approving a $1,000 appropriation to build a bridge across a ravine behind the Bellevue House on Headory Street and make related street improvements.

Police force staffing: The council confirmed two new police appointments—John Chenneville as Sergeant of Police and E.R. Ohermoller to fill a vacant officer position.

Regular Meeting Austin Texas. May 02, 1881. Mayor S.M. Crocker presiding. Present - Alderman Boardman, Duff- halle, Hall, Robertson, Shelton, Tobin. Absent Aldermen Metz, Hemperly and Wohrenberger- Quorum present- Minutes of the regular meeting of April 4th 1881 read and approved- Minutes of adjourned meeting of April 5th 1881, read & approved with changes in made on confirmation of the Board of Equalization which on motion of Alderman Robertson was deferred until the regular business of Council had been transact. Petition of Jd. Connell to open an outside meat market. GrantedPetition of W. D. Milliemes to open an outside meat market GrantedPetition of P.C. Gaylor, asking that balance be paid him on horse sold in pounds- Granted. Petition of J.R. Peel, to have amount refunded on stock impounded - Laid on the Table. Petition of C.N. Granted on motion of Alderman Robertson. Petition of O.N. Binckley to have fine in City Court accrued which had been assessed against him- Referred to City Marsshall Report of City Sexton, City Physician, City Marshal pound master and Market master for the month of April, 1881- Read and ordered filed- Reports of City assessor and collector and City Treasurer for quarter ending April 30th 1881. To the Honorable Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Austin. Your committee, to whom was referred the petition of resident citizens of the Second & third wards asking that a bridge be built across the ravine in rear of the Bellevue House on Headory Street and other improvements on said street, would recommend that the petition be granted and that an appropriation be made of One Thousand, or so much as may be necessary to do the work. To the Honorable Mayor & Board of Aldermen Your committee, to whom was referred the within petition of the board of trustees for the Blind Asylum, would most respectfully represent, that the petition conflicts with the City Charter, and therefore we have no right to grant said petition. (See Section 6th, an act to incorporate City of Austin) R. Platt Chairman Report of Auditing committee, in reference to petition of Harriet Hones, Rct. Plume, John & Spence Agents of Adams estate and Mrs. A.H. Longley was read and on motion adopted. The mayor stated that he had appointed John Chenneville as Sergeant of police, subject to the approval of the council. On motion of Alderman Platt he was confirmed by acclamation. The mayor nominated E.R. Ohermoller to fill the vacancy on the police force caused by the resignation of A.P. Withers. On Motion of Alderman Duff Mr. Ohermoller was Confirmed by acclamationThe mayor placed in nomination the following aldermen and citizens to serve on the board of equalization for the year 1867. The mayor nominated Mr E Christian in place of mr Brown who on motion of Alderman Platt was confirmed by acclamation - An ordinance amending articles 487(1), 488 (2) and 489 (2). of the revised ordinances of the City of Austin. Since the advent of the hydrants in the City the two steam fire engines have been comparatively useless - and entailing our annual expenses of about $2500. therefore be it Resolved, That Colorado steam fire engine No 2 be sold, and that the same be advertised for sale in the Austin Statesman and Galveston News, and that the sale be under the control of the City Council On motion of Alderman Halle action was deferred until the next regular meeting.
