Gentlemen of the city council. In assuming the duties of Mayor of the city of Austin, I desire to say that I am profoundly impressed with the responsibility of the position, and the difficulties that surround me and your honorable body. Like yourselves, I am a stranger to the future, but speaking alone for myself, I can say to you that I feel most sensibly the obligations assumed, and the arduous duties that revolve upon me. The care, protection and prosperity of the people are upon our hands; let us bury out of sight past differences and animosities and lend our efforts individually and collectively to the interest of the people who have chosen us to represent them and whose interests are entrusted to our hands. Let us not forget the unfavorable auspices under which we find our city and her people and her people, nor lag in our efforts to bring prosperity to rich and poor, high and low alike, and what ever sacrifices we may be called upon, personally as officials to perform, let us do it like men, remembering only the important interests we represent. In our deliberations let a spirit of harmony and fair dealing animate each one of us and if differences arise let them be settled harmoniously and honorably to all. I beg to call your attention most especially to our city finances, and to say to you that, under the existing circumstances, all efforts lending towards economy and the material advancement of Austin and her citizens will meet with my most hearty approval and cooperation.
