Austin's 1882 Budget & Prisoner Feeding Dispute

Salary Payments Approved: Council authorized $1,808.38 to pay city officials' salaries for January, though one alderman voted against it.

Major Expense Ordinance Passed: The council approved $2,304.33 to cover various city bills including gas/coal costs, engine house maintenance, prisoner and horse feeding ($74.62), and dead animal removal services.

Prisoner Feeding Controversy: A citizen named I. Emrett addressed the council regarding concerns about how city prisoners were being fed and questioned an account submitted by Ed. Emory for these services.

Property Tax Redemption Granted: A woman named Mrs. S. Dowell was permitted to reclaim property lots she had lost to a tax sale, provided she paid all back taxes and costs owed.

Called Meeting of the City Council Austin February 08, 1882 W. A. Saylor Mayor presiding. Roll call present Aldermen Netz. Kinney. Schuber. Radkey. Kuppertz. Platt. Wilson. Strent. Cook. Moeller. Brueggeshoff. Alderman Kuppertz moved a call of the Council present Netz. Kinney. Schuber. Radkey. Kuppertz. Platt. Wilson. Absent Strent. Cook. Brueggerhoff. On Motion of Alderman Kinney the Call of the Council was suspended for Call of the Council was read. The Council was called together for the purpose of considering financial matters. On Motion of Alderman Kinney the reading of the minutes of Feb 4th was suspended. The following Ordinance was called up and read second time Be it Ordained by the City Council of the City of Austin That the sum of Eighteen hundred and eight. dollars. Thirty eight cents be and the same is hereby appropriated to pay salaries of City Officials for January 1852 Alderman Platt in the Chair On Motion of Alderman Kinney the rules were suspended and the Ordinance placed on its third reading by the following vote Yeas. Netz. Kinney. Schuber. Radkey. Kuppertz. Platt. Wilson. Absent. Brueggerhoff. Cook. Moeller. On motion of Alderman Kuppertz the Ordinance passed by the following vote Yeas. Netz. Kinney. Schuber. Dowell asking that she be allowed to redeem Lots 3 & 4 Block 14 of the City of Austin, which was sold for Taxes. On Motion of Alderman Klippert, the petition was granted and the Mayor authorized to sign a deed for the same on condition that said Petitioner pay all tax and costs now due upon said land.
