Report of the City Physician for October 1885 To the Mayor & Board of Aldermen Gentlemen - Since Oct 1st 1880 17 patients have been admitted in Hospital; 11 dismissed 2 died, 19 remaining Nov 1st 1885. Three of these are private patients, paying into the Hospital $21.00 per week. Three important operations were performed during the month. One a piece of the cranial bone 1 inch square was removed from a patient. One operation for Strangulated Hernia on a man from Bastrop Co. One operation on a lady for ruptured perineum - all successfull.
It is my pleasure to commend Mrs. Alla Whigats, matron, and Dr. Frank McLaughlin, resident physician for the good work they are performing at the Hospital. The cleanliness discipline and constant kindness to the patients are mainly owing to their constant supervision.
The city patients for Oct have been quite numerous I have made 56 visits and 90 prescriptions for them during October.
The epidemic of Dengue that has prevailed for 6 months in the city, has about used up all the material. A few cases and some relapses only remain I have prepared an article on dengue which will properly be first submitted to the Travis county Medical Society. In this article I take the position that Dengue in the first cases, were imported here, and not originate here de novo in the city, but that a favorable local condition did certainly exist for its spread as an epidemic. If the germs of Dengue are imported to Austin, as I believe they were then the question of Quarantine and Local Sanitation may be the highest consideration. Respectfully submitted, W. J. Burt. M.D. City Physician
Referred to the Hospital Committee
