Present: Aldermen Alexander, Caldwell, Campbell, Cummings, Graham, Jones, Platt, Phillips, Schneider, Seidler, Waeler, Warren and Wortham - 13. Call Absent: Aldermen Anderson, Brush, Fisher, Metz, Odell, Townsend, and Wellmer - 7. The following was read: The Call Hon. J. W. Robertson, Mayor of the City of Austin: Sir - The undersigned members of the City Council respectfully request you to Call a special meeting of the City Council to Consider the question of bidding for the establishment of the Printers' Home of the Typographical Union in the City of Austin, tonight and such Other business as you may see proper to bring before said meeting. J. Cummings, J. W. Graham, W. B. Wortham, T. E. Jones. Gentlemen of the City Council: Pursuant to the above request, I hereby Call a special meeting of the City Council for 8:30 p.m. May 18, 1887. J. W. Robertson, Mayor. Aldermen Brush and Anderson were Excused. Waco. Pending the main subject, Alderman Wortham introduced a resolution, which was adopted, providing for the appointment of a special Committee of five Aldermen to visit Waco, at their own expense, for the purpose of examining the Jenny system of electric street lighting, said to be in successful operation there. Ald Townsend. Alderman Townsend Came in. Hose Cart Alderman Jones Called up a resolution providing for purchase of hose cart for use of Colorado No. 2. The resolution was read, and on motion adopted. 636 May 18, 1887. right of way Ordinance entitled "An Ordinance granting right of way to the Austin & Northwestern Railroad Company" approved November 26, 1881, was then taken up on its second reading, together with a favorable Committee report on the same. The report and Ordinance were read, after which a motion was made to suspend the rules and place the Ordinance on its third reading, which was rejected by the following Vote: Yeas - Aldermen Alexander, Caldwell, Campbell, Cummings, Graham, Jones, Phillips, Schneider, Schuler, Townsend, Waller, Wortham - 12. Nays - Aldermen Platt and Warren Ald. Fisher. Alderman Fisher was excused from voting on the question, being in the employ of the road. The Ordinance seeks to repeal that portion of the Ordinance granting the right of way, which includes San Marcos Street for the distance of one hundred feet north from Cedar Street. Printers Home Alderman Phillips introduced the following resolution: Be it resolved etc., "That the resolution providing for donating land for Printers Home, be amended by adding to Section 2 the following words: Provided, Nevertheless, that this resolution shall be null and void unless permanent improvements shall be commenced within two years from its passage." The resolution was adopted. Mayor. The mayor asked for a week's leave of absence, from May 21 next. Granted. A motion was made to adjourn, but was defeated - yeas, 7; Nays, 8. Alderman Metz came in. $650 for 8th Ward Alderman Alexander called up an Ordinance appropriating $650 for improvement of Streets in the Eighth Ward. The Ordinance was read a second time, after which Alderman Platt moved to lay the Ordinance on the table. The vote on the motion stood 8 to 8, and the Chair

Voted no, thereby rejecting the motion. A motion was then made to suspend the rules and place the Ordinance on its third reading, which was defeated by the following Vote. City Water Co. Alderman Alexander Called up an Ordinance Ordering the City Water Company to extend water mains and locate hydrants thereon, approved March 6, 1886, which was on its second reading. The Ordinance was read a second time, after which a motion was made to suspend the rules and place the Ordinance on its third reading, which was adopted by the following Vote: Oyeas – Aldermen Alexander, Caldwell, Campbell, Cummings, Fisher, Graham, Jones, Metz, Platt, Phillips, Schneider, Schuler, Townsend, Walker, Warren, Wortham – 16.
