Austin Honors Ex-Mayor Saylor's Death

Ex-Mayor W.A. Saylor's funeral: The city council called a special meeting to pay respects to former Mayor Saylor, who died unexpectedly in his prime. Council members unanimously adopted resolutions expressing their condolences to his family and pledging to attend his funeral as a body.

Legal authorization granted: Alderman Cummings moved to authorize the mayor to hire an attorney to represent the city in a lawsuit brought by Miss Maud Shelley. The motion was adopted.

Quorum present: 12 of 20 aldermen attended the meeting, with 8 absent.

48 The Minutes of a Called Meeting of the City Council. Austin, Sept 21, 1887. Hon J. W. Robertson, Mayor, presiding. Roll Call. Present Aldermen Alexander, Anderson Brush, Caldwell, Cummings, Fisher, Odell Platt, Phillips, Schneider, Schuler, Townsend, 12. Absent. Ald. Campbell, Grahams, Jones, Metz, Walker, Warren, Wollmer, Wartham 8. The Mayor's Call. (Mayor's Office,) Austin, Tex. Sept. 21, 1887. The City Council - I hereby call a special meeting of the City Council to meet at the City hall, at 3 o'clock p.m. this day, for the purpose of taking suitable and appropriate action Concerning the death and funeral ceremonies of Ex-Mayor W. A. Saylor The members of the City Council are requested to meet promptly at the hour named. Respectfully, J. W. Robertson, Mayor Alderman Odell introduced the following resolution which was unanimously adopted. Whereas, It has pleased the Supreme Ruler of our destiny to remove from our midst by the hand of death our friend and fellow citizen, W. A. Saylor, late Mayor of the City of Austin: Therefore, As a mark of our respect and esteem for our deceased friend and neighbor, and as an expression of our deep regret at his death in the very prime of life and manhood, be it resolved First - In the death of W. A. Saylor the state and this city have lost a most worthy and honored citizen Second - That the family of the deceased have sustained an irreparable loss in the death of a kind and affectionate husband and father. Third - That the City Council hereby tender to the family of the deceased our sympathy and Condolence, in this the hour of their sorrow. Fourth - That the City Council attend the funeral as a --- Page break --- body, and that a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to the family of the deceased. Spl. atty. Alderman Cummings moved that the mayor be authorized to use his discretion in employing an attorney to represent the city in the suit brought by Miss Maud Shelley. Adopted. On motion the Council adjourned Milton C. Morris, City Clerk.
