Roll Call - Present - Aldermen Assmann, Boland, Brush, Campbell, Fisher, Haigler, Jones, Linn, Odell, Platt, Phillips, Wilson - 12. Call. Absent - Aldermen Caldwell, Degress, Graham, Metz, Pillow, Schneider, Townsend, Wortham - 8. Minutes. Alderman Phillips moved that the reading of the minutes of the last meeting be postponed until the next regular meeting. adopted! Ald. Pillow. Alderman Pillow and Degress Entered and answered Degress. to their names. Recess. On motion, the Council took a recess until 8 oclock Called to 8 o'clock p.m. - The mayor Called the Council to Order. Order and directed that the roll be Called again which was done and showed the following: Present - Aldermen Assmann, Boland, Brush, Caldwell, Campbell, Degress, Fisher, Graham, Haigler, Jones, Linn, Odell, Pillow, Platt, Phillips, Townsend, Wilson, Wortham - 18. Bonds of The mayor presented the official bonds of officers. Fred Steizing, assessor and Collector; J. S. Myrick, Treasurer; J. E. Lucy, City Marshal; Sam T. P. Mathews, City Engineer; J. R. Hamilton, Recorder, and Milton Morris, City Clerk, and read the names of their Sureties. On motion, they were referred to the City attorney and, if found correct, ordered approved.
Ald. Schneider. Alderman Schneider came in. Alderman Brush introduced a Resolution Photo - Which was adopted: "That ex-mayor Robertson be asked to present to the City Council a photograph of himself, as has been Customary with all other ex-mayors, to be hung on the wall in the City hall." The mayor announced the Standing Committees. Ald. Fisher. By request, Alderman Fisher was excused from serving on the Cemetery Committee.

126 Alderman Jones moved to proceed with the election of Officers Created by Ordinance. Adopted. On motion of Alderman Platt, three tellers were appointed as follows: Aldermen Linn, Brush, and Odell. Ald. metz. Alderman Metz entered and answered to his name. The mayor then Stated nominations for City Sexton were in Order. C. L. Nitschke. Alderman Odell nominated C. L. Nitschke; D. C. Sandel. Alderman Pillow nominated D. C. Sandel. There being no other nominations, The mayor directed that ballots be prepared, which was properly done and duly canvassed by the tellers, and the result announced by them as follows: C. L. Nitschke, 10; D. C. Sandel, 10 votes. The Mayor then Stated, neither of the Candidates having received a majority of all the Votes Cast, Another ballot be prepared, Which was done, and duly Canvassed, resulting as follows: C. L. Nitschke, 7; D. C. Sandel, 13 votes. Sandel The Mayor then Said D. C. Sandel, having Elected. received a majority of all the Votes Cast, he declared him duly Elected City Sexton for the ensuing term of two years. The Mayor stated that next election in Order was that of Sergeant of Police. The marshal not being ready with his recommendations, and there being no Objection, the election was postponed. The mayor then said the next business in Order was the election of a porter for the City hall. The mayor was, at his request, and on motion of Alderman Caldwell, allowed to name the man for that position. He nominated George Wash- George Washington, and, on motion of Alderman ington. 127 election of a resident physician of the hospital. F. Mc Laughlin Alderman Caldwell nominated Dr. Frank McLaughlin. H.B. Stiles. Alderman Fisher nominated Dr. H.B. Stiles. J. Duffau. Alderman Townsend nominated Dr. Justian Duffau. There being no other nominations, the Mayor directed that ballots be prepared, which was duly done, resulting as follows: Dr. Frank McLaughlin, 12; Dr. H.B. Stiles, 6; Dr. Justian Duffau, 2 Votes. McLaughlin The Mayor then said: “Dr. Frank McLaughlin, Elected. having received a majority of all the votes cast, he is declared him duly elected resident physician of the hospital for the ensuing term of two years. The next business in Order, as stated Mrs. Allie by the Mayor, being that of the election of Wright matron of the hospital. Alderman Fisher moved that Mrs. Allie Wright be elected by acclamation. A motion was made to amend the motion made by Alderman Fisher by directing the City Clerk to cast the twenty votes of the Council for Mrs. Allie Wright. The amendment was accepted, and the motion, as amended, carried. The twenty votes were Elected. Then cast for Mrs. Allie Wright. The Mayor stated the next business in order was the election of a Sanitary inspector. D.W. Johnson. Alderman Fisher nominated D.W. Johnson. J.W. La Rue. Alderman Linn nominated J.W. La Rue. There being no other nominations, the Mayor directed that ballots be prepared, which was done and duly canvassed, and resulted as follows: D.W. Johnson, 14; J.W. La Rue, 6. Johnson The Mayor then Said: “D.W. Johnson having received a majority of all the votes cast, Elected. I declare him elected Sanitary inspector.” Spl. Alderman De Gress introduced the following Comtee which was adopted: On “Resolved, That the Conflict Mayor appoint a Committee of five, and the of City Attorney be requested to act with Ordinances Said Committee, to examine the & Ordinances of the City, and, where they

128 anything are found to be in conflict with else. with the City Charter, present an Ordinance repealing the Same; and further, to present such other matters for the consideration of the City Council as may Seem to them for the best interests of the City. "Resolved, That this Committee make their report at the next regular meeting of the Council." St. Comr. Alderman Pillow offered an Ordinance Creating the office of Street Commissioner of the City of Austin, and prescribing the Salary and duties of that office. The Ordinance was read first time, after which a motion was made to Suspend the rules and place the Ordinance on its Second reading which was adopted by the following vote: Yeas – Aldermen Assmann, Boland Brusch, Caldwell, DeGress, Graham, Haigler, Jones, Odell, Pillow, Platt, Phillips, Wilson and Wartham – 14. Nays – Aldermen Campbell, Fisher, Linn, Metz, Schneider, Townsend – 6. The Ordinance was then read a Second time, after which a motion was made to Suspend the rules and place the Ordinance on its third reading; which was adopted by the following vote: Yeas – Aldermen Assmann, Boland, Brusch, Caldwell, DeGress, Fisher, Graham, Haigler, Jones, Linn, Metz, Odell, Pillow, Platt, Phillips, Townsend, Wilson, Wartham – 18. 129 The Mayor Then declared the name of F. E. Jones withdrawn. Alderman Wortham by authority Then nominated F. E. Jones. Alderman Caldwell explained that there was a misunderstanding which Caused him to withdraw the name of F. E. Jones. There being no other nominations, the mayor requested that ballots be prepared, which was done, resulting as follows; Ed Creary, 11; F. E. Jones, Creary | 9 Votes. The Mayor Then announced That Ed elected. | Creary having Received a majority of all the Votes Cast, he declared him elected Street Commissioner for the ensuing term of two years.
