Roll Call. Present Aldermen Assmann, Boland, Brush, Campbell, DeGress, Fisher, Graham, Jones, Linn, Metz, Odell, Phillips, Pillow, Platt, Townsend, Wortham - 16. Absent. Aldermen Caldwell, Haigler, Schneider, Wilson. 4.
Minutes. The minutes of the last meeting of the City Council were adopted as printed.
Marshal. The Marshal's report for the month of June was presented and referred to the Police Committee. It Shows: Total fines and Costs assessed $455.30 Collected in Cash $151.40 Worked out 300.90 Escaped 23.10 Carried forward 79.90 455.30
Total number of arrests made- 55.
City Phys. The City Physician's report for the month of June, 1888: Patients in Hospital June 1, 1888 8 " Admitted to " in " 12 " discharged from " " " 9 Deaths 2 Patients remaining in " July 1 9 Cases of Diphtheria reported 2 Prescriptions written 206 Visits made 166 The report recommends that Copperas, Crude Carbolic acid or some other disinfectant be used in the gutters on the Avenue and Pecan Street, during the hot weather of July, August and September. Referred to Finance Committee. Report of City Sexton for the month of June, 1888: Number of deaths 27 White 18 Colored 7 Referred to Cemetery Committee Alderman Wilson entered, and answered to his name. A. Zieler, Chief of Austin fire department, requested further time in which to test the fire alarm system. Granted. The City Attorney presented his opinion on a report from the assessor and Collector, stating that W. N. Cruchen refused to pay rent due for that portion of River Walk heretofore leased to him by the City of Austin, which report was referred to him by the Council at a previous meeting. He advises that the City institute suit against W. N. Cruchen to recover the amount due. Alderman Schneider entered, and answered to his name. A motion was then made to instruct the City attorney to take the steps necessary to eject Mr Cruchen. Alderman Brush moved to lay the motion on the table, which was lost, and the motion instructing the City Attorney prevailed. Alderman Platt, of the Street Committee, presented a report on a petition of Citizens req- uesting that the alley between East Third and Fourth Streets, in block 36, be opened. It states that the City Engineer had been instructed to comply with the petition. Report ordered received and filed. The Committee on Finance submitted a favorable report on a petition from Joseph Spence, agent for Mrs Mary J. McCorkle, requesting that taxes to the amount of $20, which were erroneously assessed against her property, be refunded. The report was adopted.

M.W.[illegible] The Mayor laid before the Council a communication from Mr Van Patten, stating that an error had been made in assessing Certain property belonging to Mr. W.W. Bissell, and requesting that the Assessor and Collector be instructed to receive the amount of taxes actually due - $36.67. The petition was granted. In Vis The Committee on finance reported, recommending that the error in the assessment and Sale of Dr. A.B. Nicals property be Corrected and that $9.09 be refunded to him. Adopted. Name Streets Alderman Brush Chairman of the Special Committee on naming and renaming streets, presented a report, which was read and re-committed. At his request, Alderman Brush was removed from the Committee. Alderman Wortham was, on motion, named to succeed Alderman Brush on the Committee. Tax-Scind An Ordinance fixing and levying an ad Valorem tax of One-third of One per Centum on all property, real and personal, within the City of Austin, made taxable for state and County purposes, for the year A.D. 1888, for the support of the public free Schools of said City, was taken up on its Second reading, with the pending motion of Alderman Jones to strike out "One-third" and insert "One-fourth" of One per Centum. Alderman Phillips moved to lay the motion on the table. Carried. The Ordinance was read a third time, after which it was, on motion, Carried by the following Vote: Yeas- Aldermen Assmann, Boland, Brush, Campbell, Debress, Fisher, Graham, Linn, Odell, Phillips, Pillows, Schneider, Townsend, Wortham - 14. Nays- Aldermen Jones, Metz, Platt, Wilson - 4. Asst. at: The City attorney presented a report on an Ordinance fixing the tenure and salary of the assistant assessor and Collector. The report states that " it seems quite clear " " " that under this Ordinance the

Assistant Assessor and Collector can hold his office for Six months, and that the assessor and Collector has the right to designate the time, during which he desires the Services of an assistant". The Ordinance relating to the office was taken up on its Second reading. Alderman Phillips moved to amend it by inserting the words "beginning January First and running Consecutively for Six months in the year." Alderman Boland then moved to lay the Ordinance and amendment on the table, Subject to Call. Carried. Ald Phillips Alderman Phillips was excused. [illegible] approved accts Alderman DeGress introduced an Ordinance appropriating $7034.05 for the purpose of paying approved accounts. It was read first time, after which the rules were suspended and it was placed on its Second reading by a two-thirds Vote of a full board. It was then read a second time, after which Alderman Wortham moved to amend by adding the following: "$20.00 to refund amount of tax erroneously assessed against Mrs. Mary J. McLorkle; $9.09 tax refunded to Dr A.B. Skeal; $9.54 taxes erroneously paid by Mrs. T.J. Houslon; $35 to pay part of expenses of Dr. Fisher's trip to Kansas City in behalf of this city to secure the printers home; $10.20 to refund fine of H.C. Thompson which was remitted by the Council. The amendment was adopted and the Caption and section one were Changed to read $7117.88" after which motions were made to Suspend the rules and place the ordinance on its third reading, and that it do pass, both of which were adopted by the following Vote: Assman, Boland, Brush, Campbell, DeGress, Fisher, Graham, Jones, Linn, Metz, Odell, Pillow, Platt, Schneider, Townsend, Wilson, Wortham, 17. to dispose of the iron bridge on East First Street, to the best advantage of the city. The recorder of the Austin fire department presented a resolution which was adopted by the board of fire Commissioners, June 27, requesting the Council to purchase a hose Carriage for East Austin Hose Company No. 4.
