Austin Ends Hospital Contract With County

Hospital Contract Terminated – Travis County's Commissioners Court rescinded its agreement with Austin to jointly maintain the City and County Hospital, effective May 21, 1889.

Emergency Meeting Called – Mayor Joseph C. Nalle convened a special evening session to inform city aldermen of the contract cancellation and determine next steps.

Committee Appointed – The council unanimously voted to form a Hospital Committee of three aldermen to meet with county commissioners and report back on how to resolve the dispute.

482 The Minutes of a called meeting of the City Council Austin June 10, 1889 Hon Joseph C Nalle Mayor presiding Roll Roll call. Present Aldermen Aisman Nepsodle Gillis Boland North Eagleston Schneider Lemm Northam Call. Absent Aldermen De Grass Newton Hayler Olford Jones Platt Lawrence Townsend Metz Wilson Morris Call Council The following was then read To the Board of Aldermen &c In pursuance of Section (5) Five section (1) one of the City Charter. I hereby call a special Meeting of the City Council to meet at the Council Chamber at the City Hall on this day (June 10th 1889) at 8 1/2 o'clock P.M. for the purpose of laying before you a certified copy of an order made by the Commissioners Court of Travis County, rescinding the contract existing between the City of Austin and Travis County in regard to maintaining the City and County Hospital Austin Texas June 10th 1889 Joseph C Nalle Mayor. Under Call. Alderman Gillis moved a call of the Council which was agreed to and the Marshal instructed to bring in the Absentees a recess of twenty (20) minutes was taken when Aldermen Jones and Newton answered to their names. Hospital. The Mayor then introduced the following copy of an order of the Commissioners Court to wit: “On this May 21st 1889 it was ordered by the Court that the contract between Austin City and Travis County in reference to Hospital be annulled” --- Page break --- 483 State of Texas } Travis County } I hereby certify the above to be a true copy of the original order of the Commissioners Court of Travis County, Texas, as the same appears of record in my office. Given under my hand and seal of said Court. June 7th 1889. Frank Brown. Clerk. " Alderman Poland made a motion that the Mayor appoint a Committee of three to confer with the Commissioners Court of Travis County and to report their action at a subsequent Meeting of the City Council to be called by the Mayor. After a few desultory remarks, pro and con, engaged in by Aldermen Poland, Millett, Graham, Smith and Miller. Alderman Graham moved that the words "Hospital Committee" be substituted for "Committee of three" which was agreed to and Alderman Polands motion as amended passed unanimously. On motion the Council adjourned Nate McCarley City Clerk, Pro tem.
