Austin Election Judge Appointments May 1890

Monday, May 5, 1890 special called

Election judges reassigned: The council held an emergency meeting to replace election judges who declined their appointments, including new judges for the Fourth Ward (Ed Jurok), Third Ward (Jos. Harrell Jr.), and Seventh Ward (John P. Kirk).

Low attendance required intervention: Only 9 of 21 aldermen initially showed up, forcing Mayor John McDonald to formally call the council into session to establish a quorum.

Staff confirmations approved: The council confirmed G. D. Walker and J. B. Hutchison as election clerks and assistants for the Eleventh Ward.

625 The minutes of a Called meeting of the City Council. Austin, Texas, May 05, 1890. Hon. John McDonald, mayor presiding. Roll Roll Call. Present. Aldermen Assmann, Jackson, Jones, Marchis, Nitschke, Phillips, Dehnhein, Townsend, Zieer-9. Call. Absent. Aldermen - Anderson, Baland, Carletan, Abraham, Hume, Linn, Mnitz, Newton, North, Platt, Schneider, - 11. There being no quorum present a Call of the Council was ordered. Aldermen Anderson, Carletan, Linn, and North, entered the Council and the Call was suspended. The following Call was then read. Call. Austin, Texas, May 3, 1890. To the members of the Council of the City of Austin. Gentlemen: I hereby Call a Special meeting of the City Council of the City of Austin to meet at the room of the Council Monday morning May the 5th at 9 o'clock for the purpose of removing or accepting the resignation of such election Judges heretofore appointed but who are unable or have refused to serve and appointing in their stead such other persons as the Council may deem proper to appoint. John McDonald, Mayor. We the undersigned members of the City Council hereby accept service of notice of the foregoing call for special meeting of the City Council this the 3d day of May 1890. J.W. Morris, T. E. Jones, C. E. Anderson, J. A. Jackson, A. A. Linn, J. H. F. North, George P. Assmann, J. H. Graham, A. W. Townsend, Fred Carletan, J. Linthcerne, J. W. Nitschke, M. Boland, J. Schuler, A. H. Newton, Jno. W. Phillips, W. Zieler, C. S. Mnitz, J. P. Dehneiden, R. Platt, [illegible] Alderman Zieler moved that as Chas. Caldwell --- Page break --- 626 Judges would not accept the appointment of Judge of Election for the fourth Ward that Ed Jurok be appointed in his stead. Carried. Alderman Morris moved that as E. C. Bartholomew would not accept the appointment of Judge of Election for the Third Ward that Jos. Harrell, Jr. be appointed in his stead. Adopted. There being no objection, Alderman Scheider and Jackson were excused. Notice having been received from the Judges of Election for the Eleventh Ward of the appointment by them of G. D. Walker and J. B. Hutchison as Clerks as assistants, they were confirmed as such Clerks as assistants. Alderm Schneider entered the Council and answered to his name. John P. Kirk, was on motion, appointed Judge of Election for the Seventh Ward instead of W. W. Archer who would not accept the appointment as Judge of Election for said Ward.
