Austin Approves $60K Railroad to Dam Site

Major Infrastructure Investment: The city council unanimously approved spending $60,000 from the Water and Light fund to build a railroad connecting Austin to a proposed dam site on the Colorado River, aimed at supporting dam construction efforts.

Additional Dam Funding: Council also approved a separate payment of $5,584.16 to cover work already completed on the Colorado River dam project.

Near-Unanimous Support: Both ordinances passed with overwhelming approval—the railroad project received only one dissenting vote (Alderman Schneider), while the dam payment passed unanimously 18-0.

Emergency Meeting Called: This special midnight meeting (scheduled for 9:35 p.m.) was convened specifically to address these time-sensitive water infrastructure projects.

38 The Minutes of a Called meeting of the City Council. Austin, Tex, Dec. 6, 1890. Hon. John McDonald, mayor, presiding. Roll Voll Call- Present- Aldermen Anderson, Assmann, Carleton, Glass, Graham, Jackson, Linn, Morris, Newton, Nitschke, North, Phillips, Schneider, Schuber, Sutar, Townsend, Wingfield, Filler- 18. Call. Absent- Alderman Hume, Bhall- 2. The following Call was read: Call of Council. " Austin, Texas, Dec. 6, 1890. To the members of the City Council of the city of Austin. A Special meeting of the city Council of the city of Austin is hereby called to meet at the Council rooms of the city Council in the City of Austin on this the 6th day of December 1890 at 9:35 oclock p.m. to take such action as the Council may deem proper on an Ordinance to be then introduced to appropriate the sum of Sixty thousand dollars out of the Water and Light fund to build a railroad through and from the City to the site of the proposed dam for the purpose of aiding in constructing said dam and to make other necessary appropriations to pay expenses of said work on the dam. John McDonald, Mayor. " Railroad Alderman North introduced an Ordinance Entitled "An Ordinance appropriating the sum of Sixty thousand dollars out of the Water and Light fund, or so much thereof as may be necessary to build a railroad from the City of Austin to the dam site" It was read the first time after which a motion was made to suspend the rules and place the Ordinance on its second reading which was adopted by the following Vote- Yeas- Aldermen Anderson, Assmann, Carleton, Glass, Graham, Jackson, Linn, Morris, Newton, Nitschke, North, Phillips, Schuber, Sutar, Townsend, Wingfield, Filler- 17. Nay- Alderman Schneider- 1. The Ordinance was read a second time after which a motion was made to suspend the rules and place the Ordinance on its third reading which was adopted by the following vote- Yeas- Aldermen Anderson, Assmann, Carleton, Glass, Graham, Jackson, Linn, Morris, Newton, Nitschke, North, Phillips, Schneider, Schuber, Sutar, Townsend, Wingfield, Filler- 18. --- Page break --- 39 The Ordinance was read a third time and on motion passed by the following vote, yeas, Aldermen Anderson, Assmann, Carleton, Glass, Graham, Jackson, Linn, Morris, Newton, Nitschke, North, Phillips, Schneider, Schuler, Sutor, Townsend, Wingfield, Ziller-18. Alderman Morris presented an Ordinance making an appropriation of the sum of five thousand five hundred and eighty four and sixteen one hundredth dollars to pay for work done in the building of the dam across the Colorado river. Carrigan $5584.16, paid on dam It was read the first time after which a motion was made to suspend the rules and place the Ordinance on its Second reading which was adopted by the following vote - yeas - Aldermen Anderson, Assmann, Carleton, Glass, Graham, Jackson, Linn, Morris, Newton, Nitschke, North, Phillips, Schneider, Schuler, Sutor, Townsend, Wingfield, Ziller - 18. The Ordinance was then read a third time after which a motion was made to suspend the rules and place the Ordinance on its third reading which was adopted by the following vote - yeas - Aldermen Anderson, Assmann, Carleton, Glass, Graham, Jackson, Linn, Morris Newton, Nitschke, North, Phillips, Schneider, Schuler, Sutor, Townsend, Wingfield, Ziller-18.
