Austin Water System Construction Costs Approved

Alderman Anderson moved that Mr. Neil McCaskin be requested to relieve the city clerk from attendance upon the council to enable him to prepare the approved accounts ordinance. St. Bridge The city engineer presented a report stating in substance that he had caused the bridge on East Fifth Street over Haller Creek to be closed up on account of its unsafe condition. --- Page break --- 533 " The stringers and flooring being rotten, and that after consultation " with the mayor he had ordered suitable timber with which to " repair the same. " Alderman Glass moved that the city engineer be authorized " to proceed at once to repair said bridge and the motion was " adopted. Groves. By Engineer Groves – A report stating that he has organized a force of about 80 men and is excavating the bank East of the dam, preparatory to extending the wall of the gate head masonry, cleaning loose rock from the location of the power house and removing such portion of the gate head masonry as seems necessary. The portion of the wall at the East end of the gate head masonry is excavated six feet lower than the foundation upon which it rests. A suitable foundation has been reached. The report was read and referred to the committee on water and light. Corrigans figures Correct The following was read. Office of Board of Public Works, Austin, Tex. July 3, 1893. Honorable Mayor and City Council, Austin, Tex. Gentlemen, I have the honor to report that the board of public works, at a meeting held on this date, adopted the report of the joint committee in the matter of final settlement with Mr Bernard Corrigan. Respectfully, H. J. Oliphant, Secretary. It was referred to the water and light committee. Ald. Ketchum. Alderman Ketchum entered the council and answered to his name. Reports of Committees. Mrs. L. S. Robertson. tax. The city attorney to whom was referred the petition of Mrs. L. S. Robertson in regard to settlement of her back taxes, submitted a report thereon which states that "in my opinion Mrs. Robertson settled in full the amount "of tax due to the city of Austin when she executed and "delivered the deed conveying to the city the property described "in her original proposition of compromise. I am therefore "of the opinion the prayer of her petition should be granted." 7 It was moved that the report be adopted and the petition be granted, and it was carried. 7 $99.00 for Culvert on 23d. Alderman Jackson for the committee on Streets and alleys, to whom was referred an ordinance appropriating the sum of $99.00 for the purpose of constructing a culvert on Twenty third street between Guadaloupe and San Antonio streets, submitted a report thereon recommending the passage of the same. Alderman Jackson, for the committee on Streets and alleys, to whom was referred an ordinance appropriating $90.00 for the purpose of building a foot bridge over Waller Creek at East Thirteenth Street, offered a report thereon recommending the passage of the same, and the report prevailed. Alderman Shelley, for the committee on claims and accounts, to whom was referred the petition of A. B. Deen asking to be relieved from the payment of taxes on an account of $1000.00 in credits, claiming that he was not the owner of said credits on the first day of January, 1892, submitted a report thereon which states "that they have been unable to ascertain the date of the transfer to Mrs. Pease, she being absent from the city and her agent having no knowledge of the transaction. We therefore return the petition for such action as the council may deem proper in the premises." The report was adopted. Alderman Shelley, for the committee on claims and accounts, to whom was referred the petition of John Doehler asking a remission of a portion of the taxes on his assessment of merchandize, offered a report thereon and returned the petition with the recommendation that it be not granted, as the valuation was fixed by the Board of Equalization, whose acts, in the opinion of the committee the council has no authority to revise. The report was adopted. Alderman Shelley, for the committee on claims and accounts, to whom was referred the petition of S. C. Granberry asking that the valuation of his property in South Austin, as fixed by the Board of Equalization, be reduced, presented a report thereon, which states "that while the valuation, as stated by Mr. Granberry, is double that of the surrounding property, under the provisions of Section 41, Page 10 of the City Charter the council has no authority to reduce the same." The report was adopted. Alderman Shelley, for the committee on claims and accounts, to whom was referred the claim of J. J. White for damages to submerged lands, offered a report recommending that it be referred to the board of public works. Adopted. Alderman Anderson, for the joint committee recently appointed to examine and revise the calculations and figures of the general estimate between Mr. Bernard Corrigan and the city of Austin To ascertain the exact amount due Mr. Corrigan on his contract with the city of Austin, presented a report from Mr. Paul Helwig, C. E., which states that "after communicating with Mr. E. H. Groves, engineer in charge --- Page break --- 535 of the present dam work, etc, and going over all the profiles, drawings, surveys, contracts, etc, and having carefully refigured all the work under contract by Mr. Bernard Corrigan, I have found the figures correct in every particular. The report was adopted. Ald. Assmann Entered. Aldermann Assmann entered the council and answered to his name. Unfinished Business. "Woodside Cemetery" An ordinance establishing Woodside Cemetery was taken up on its third reading. Aldermann Schneider moved to amend the same by striking out the word "Woodside" and inserting in lieu thereof "Austin City" Cemetery. The amendment prevailed by the following vote: Yeas-12. Aldermen Anderson, Jackson, Schneider, Assmann, Linn, Schuber, Dawson, North, Shelley, Fischer, Powell, Townsend. Nays-7. Aldermen Glass, Platt, Taylor, Ketchum, Raymond, Warmoth. Miller, The ordinance was then read a third time and on motion passed. $90$ for foot bridge on E. 13th. St. An ordinance appropriating $90 for the purpose of building a foot bridge over Waller's creek at East Thirteenth street, was taken up on its second reading and read, after which motions were made to suspend the rules and place the ordinance on its third reading and that it do now pass, each of which were adopted by the following vote: Yeas-19. Ave. + E. 8th St. An ordinance appropriating $125 for building a bridge at the intersection of Congress avenue and East Eighth street, was taken up and read, after which a motion was made to suspend the rules and place the same on its second reading which was lost by the vote: Yeas-14. By Alderman Linn: An ordinance appropriating the sum of $45,489.33 for the purpose of paying certain expenses connected with the construction of the water and light system for the city of Austin. The items named are as follows: Bernard Corrigan, final estimate, $44,461.68; H. L. Breneman estimate No. 2, Power house, $1027.65. The ordinance was read the first time, after which motions were made to suspend the rules and place the same on its second and third readings and that it do now pass, each of which were adopted by the following vote: Yeas-18. By Alderman Raymond - A resolution providing for the appointment of a committee of four, two aldermen and two members of the board of public works, whose duty it shall be to prepare a statement to the citizens of Austin, giving an estimate of when the power house and water and electric light systems of the city, now in course of construction, will be ready for use, the estimated cost to the consumers of water and
