Austin Water Works Bond Election Set for 1895

130 Minutes of a Called Meeting of the City Council. Austin, Texas, May 14, 1895 Hon. John McDonald, mayor, presiding. Roll call. Present Aldermen Anderson, Fischer, Glues, Glascock, Haynes, Jackson, Nitschke, Powell, Schneider, Shelley, Taylor, Robin, Townsend, Warmoth- 14. Absent: Aldermen Asmmann, Forth, Hume, Lawless, Linn, Platt, Redd, Roberdean- 8. Alderman Schneider moved a call of the council and the motion carried. A few minutes later, Alderman Taylor moved that the call of the council be suspended. The motion prevailed and the roll was again called with the following result: Present Aldermen Anderson, Assmann, Fischer, Glass, Glascock, Forth, Haynes, Jackson, Nitschke, Powell, Schneider, Shelley, Taylor, Robin, Townsend, Warmoth- 16. Absent: Aldermen Hume, Lawless, Linn, Platt, Redd, Roberdean. 6. The following was read: Austin, Texas May 14th 1895 To the members of the Board of Aldermen of the City of Austin. Gentlemen- We, the undersigned aldermen of the city of Austin, hereby call a special meeting of the city council of the city of Austin to assemble in the council chamber at the city hall in the city of Austin at 5 o'clock p.m., this day, May 14th A.D. 1895, for the purpose of considering an ordinance entitled "An ordinance ordering an election to obtain consent of the property taxpaying qualified voters of the City of Austin to the extension by the city council of the bonded indebtedness of the city of Austin, in the sum of one hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars for the purpose of completing the system of water works now in course of construction and furnishing lights for the city of Austin." Austin, Texas, May 14th 1895. 4. p.m. I hereby certify that the following aldermen have been served with the above "call" by having it read to each of them in person, viz: Aldermen Anderson, Assmann, Fischer, Glass, Glascock, Forth, Haynes, Jackson, Lawless, Linn, Nitschke, Platt, Powell, Redd, Roberdean, Schneider, Shelley, Taylor, Robin, Townsend, and Warmoth and that Alderman Hume has been served by a true copy having been left at his place of business, he being out of the city. The pending business being an ordinance entitled "an ordinance ordering an election to obtain consent of the property taxpaying qualified voters of the city of Austin to the extension by the city council of the bonded indebtedness of the city of Austin, in the sum of one hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars, for the purpose of completing --- Page break --- 131 the system of waterworks now in course of construction and furnishing lights for the city of Austin, Alderman Anderson moved to amend the caption and sections around five by striking out $125000 and inserting in lieu thereof $200,000. Lost by the following vote: Yeas- Aldermen Anderson, Asmmann, Glascock, Haynes, Nitschke, Schneider, Warmoth- 7. Nays- Aldermen Fischer, Glues, Goeth, Jackson, Powell, Shelley, Taylor, Tobin, Townsend-9. Alderman Goeth moved that the ordinance be again referred to a special committee. Not seconded. Alderman Asmann moved that the council adjourn lost by a rising vote of six to nine. Alderman Fischer then moved to amend section one of the Date of Election ordinance by inserting June 24th AD 1890, as the date said election shall be held. Carried. On motion, section four was amended by inserting the Judges of the Election names of the following named persons as judges of said election in their respective wards, to-wit: For the First Ward- R. C. Shelley, Fritz Meincher, C. Cuneo. For the Second Ward- S. G. Kingsbury, M. M. Long, F. M. Maddox. For the Third Ward- P. L. When, Joe Harrall Jr., W. N. Crunchon. For the Fourth Ward- Fritz Degener, W. W. Williams, J. D. Roberdeau. For the Fifth Ward- George Warren, W. H. Stary, W. B. Odom. For the Sixth Ward- J. H. Holloand, August Weelbacher, J. M. Braunn. For the Seventh Ward- J. B. Rogers, Ferdius Haschke, Thos L. Purnell. For the Eighth Ward- H. F. Lee, S. P. Swrath, A. H. Newton. For the Ninth Ward- R. M. Castleman, R. Y. Bandy, W. E. Risher. Places for holding Election On motion, section six was amended by inserting the following places for holding said election. In the First Ward, at Glass' wood yard. In the Second Ward, at Rosette & Beatys shop In the Third Ward, at city hall. In the Fourth Ward, at Joe Goodman's store. In the Fifth Ward, at building of Protection Hose Company No. 3. In the Sixth Ward, at Davis' store. In the Seventh Ward, at Wellmer's mill. In the Eighth Ward, at County Court Lause. In the Ninth Ward, at Searight's stable. In the Tenth Ward, at Zilker's coal bins. In the Eleventh Ward, at Fireman's Hall. The ordinance was then read a third time and passed by the following vote: Yeas- Aldermen Anderson, Asmann, Fischer, Glues, Haynes, Jackson, Nitschke, Powell, Schneider, Shelley, Taylor, Tobin, Townsend, Warmoth-14 Nays- Aldermen- Glaswood and Goeth- 2.
