Minutes of a Called Meeting of the City Council. Austin, Texas, March 08, 1897 Hon. H. A. Linn, President of the Council, presiding. Roll Called. Present, Aldermen Bruin, Haynes, Kuhn, Linn, Maddox, Platt, Powell, Roberdeau, Rosengren, Stumpf, Saylor and Townsend 12. Absent, Aldermen Beaty, Fischer, Horton, Lawless, Miller, Nithing, Rudd, Schneider, Shelley, and Zilker. 10. The following call of the Council was then read: Austin, Texas, March 8th 1897. We, the undersigned members of the City Council hereby call a special meeting of the Council to assemble in the City Council Chamber, on this Monday, March 8th, 1897, at 8 o'clock P.M., for the purpose of considering the matter of Street and Bridgework and the manner in which same shall be done and to make an appropriation therefor. J. W. Maddox, H. E. Haynes, R. L. Roberdeau, J. W. Townsend, J. M. Beaty, Joseph Stumpf Austin, Texas, March 8th 1897. Marshal's Certificate of Serving Call. J. C. W. I hereby certify that the following named Aldermen have been served with the above call by having it read to each of them in person, viz: Beaty, Belgin, Fischer, Haynes, Kuling, Lawless, Linn, Maddox, Miller, Nitching, Platt, Powell, Rudd, Roberdeau, Rosengren, Schneider, Shelley, Stumpf, Saylor, Townsend and Zilker, and That Alderman Horton has been served by a true copy, having been left at his place of business he being out of the City. James E. Lucy, City Marshal. Mr. Alderman Townsend moved a roll of the Council, which was seconded and ordered. Alderman Maddox moved to excuse Alderman Horton & Shelley which motion prevailed. The Marshal was then directed to bring in the absentees. On motion the Council took a recess of 10 minutes. At the end of the recess the Council was called to order. Row called, Present, Aldermen Bruin, Belvin, Haynes, Kuling, Linn, Maddox, Miller, Nitching, Platt, Powell, Rudd, Roberdeau, Rosengren, Schneider, Stumpf, Saylor, Townsend and Zilker 18. Absent, Aldermen Fischer & Lawless. v Excused, Alderman Horton & Shelley. v Alderman Bruin moved to suspend the rules, which motion prevailed. Alderman Haynes, the ordinance appropriating the sum of $70,000 to go to words of Sewers, Pavements, and [illegible] --- Page break --- 598 The ordinance was read first time Alderman Redd moved to suspend the rule and place the ordinance on its second reading. Alderman Taylor moved as a substitul. that further action on the ordinance be postponed for three days. Lost by the following vot: Yeas Aldermen Kuhn, Roberdeau, Rosengren, Taylor and Zilver. 5. Nays Aldermen Beaty, Belvin, Haynes, Linn, Madden, Miller, Nitschner, Platt, Powell, Redd, Schneider, Stumpf and Townsend. 13. The vote was then taken on the motion of Alderman Redd to suspend the rule and place the ordinance on its second reading which motion was lost by the following vote: Yeas Aldermen Beaty, Belvin, Haynes, Linn, Maddox, Miller, Nitschner, Platt, Powell, Redd, Schneider, Stumpf, Taylor, Townsend 14. Nays Aldermen Kuhn, Roberdeau, Rosengren and Zilver 4. Alderman Kuhn moved to reconsider the vote by which the Council refused to suspend the rule and place the ordinance on its second reading, which motion prevailed. Alderman Powell then moved to suspend the rule and place the ordinance on its second reading, which motion prevailed by the following vote: Yeas Aldermen Beaty, Belvin, Haynes, Kuhn, Linn, Maddox, Miller, Nitschner, Platt, Powell, Redd, Roberdeau, Rosengren, Schneider, Stumpf, Taylor, Townsend and Zilver 18. Nays None The ordinance was then read a second time. Ord. amended to read $400 Alderman Belvin moved to amend by striking out $800.00 and instead of $800-- passed as inserting $400.00 which motion prevailed. amended. The ordinance as amended was then passed under suspension of the rule by the following vote: Yeas Aldermen Beaty, Belvin, Haynes, Kuhn, Linn, Maddox, Miller, Nitschner, Platt, Powell, Redd, Roberdeau, Rosengren, Schneider, Stumpf, Taylor, Townsend and Zilver 18.
