Austin's 1897 Year-End Budget Approvals

Fire Department Equipment Purchase: Council approved spending $1,440 on 2,500 feet of fire hose to upgrade the city's firefighting capabilities.

739 Minutes of a regular Meeting of the City Council. Austin Texas, Dec. 20th 1897. Hon. John D. McCall, Mayor, presiding. Roll called. Present, Aldermen Beaty, Belvin, Crooker, Fischer, Haynes, Horton, Kuehne, Maddox, McLemore, Miller, Morris, Olitsche, Platt, Powell, Rosengren, Shelley, Stumpf, Taylor and Townsend. 21. Absent, Aldermen Roberdeau and Zilker. 2. Minutes of last regular meeting approved as printed. On motion the minutes of the last regular meeting were approved as printed without reading. Petitions, etc. Petition of Geo. Frigel for permission to close side walk on Congress Av. & 7th St. By Alderman Beaty. Petition of Geo. Frigel, for permission to close side walk on Congress Avenue, and Seventh Street, while repairing building. On motion the petition was referred to the Street Committee, the City Attorney and the City Engineer, by the following vote: Yeas, Aldermen Belvin, Fischer, Horton, Kuehne, Maddox, Miller, Olitsche, Rosengren, Shelley, Taylor and Townsend. 12. Nays Aldermen Beaty, Crooker, Haynes, McLemore, Morris, Platt, Powell, Stumpf and Zilker. 9. Aldermen Roberdeau and Zilker entered the Council Chamber. Pet. of Miss Bettie Brewster asking Council to pay one half of cost of R.R. ticket for P. Grunta's family to Mexico By Alderman Haynes. Petition of Miss Bettie Brewster asking that the Council appropriate an amount sufficient to pay one half of the Railroad fare of Pedro Grunta and family to Mexico, the County of Travis proposing to pay the other half of the expense. On motion the petition was laid over to come up with an ordinance on the subject under the head of new business. Petition of Citizens of 11th Ward asking that certain Street work be done. By Alderman Miller. Petition of Citizens of the Eleventh Ward asking that certain Street work be done, read and referred to the Street Committee. Reports of Standing Committees. Report of Fire Com- & Bd of Fire Commissioners, on bids for 2500 ft Fire Hose. By Alderman Roberdeau. Report of the Fire Committee and the Board of Fire Commissioners, submitting bids for 2500 feet of Fire hose and making certain recommendations as to purchase. On motion the report was adopted, and the Mayor was directed to enter into contract for same. Report of Bd. of Fire Commissioners on pet. of Chas. Wolf The board of Fire Commissioners, to whom was referred the application of Charles Wolf for permission to repair a building within the fire limits, presented a report recommending that the petition be granted. On motion the report was adopted. Police Committee's report on City Marshal's report for Nov. '97 Alderman Powell for the Police Committee to whom was referred the reports of the City Marshal for the month of November, 1897, presented a report, stating that the reports had been examined and found correct. On motion the report was adopted and ordered filed. Claims Committee's report on Pet. of J.C. Murray & O.E. Ballard. By Alderman Platt, for the Committee on Claims and Accounts, to whom was referred the petition of J.C. Murray and O.E. Ballard, asking remission of occupation license [illegible]. Recommending that the petition be granted. On motion the report was adopted. Invitation from East Austin Hose Co #4 An invitation from East Austin Hose Company, inviting the Council to to attend Annual Ball Jan 1st 1898 attend their Twelfth Annual ball on Saturday evening, January 1st 1898, was read, and on motion was accepted with thanks. D.J. Kelleher appointed and A communication was read from the City Clerk, notifying the Council confirmed as Asst. City Clerk. that he had appointed Mr. D.J. Kelleher as Assistant City Clerk, and asking that the appointment be confirmed. On motion the appointment was confirmed. Communication from Jno. C. Hanley, A communication from John C. Hanley, Chairman on location of the Chairman, on location People's Party People's Party National Convention was read, and on motion, was reNational Convention ferred to the Commercial Club. Appropriating $1440.00 to By Alderman Roberdeau. An ordinance appropriating the sum of pay for 2500 ft. Ginn Hose $1440.00 to purchase 2500 feet of Ginn Hose. The ordinance was read first time. The report of the Fire Commissioners together with the report of the Fire Committee recommending the purchase of 2500 feet of Hose was read, the report was adopted, and on motion the rules were suspended, and the ordinance placed on its second reading, by the following vote: Yeas, Aldermen Beaty, Belvin, Booker, Fischer, Haynes, Horton, Huhn, Maddox, Mc Lemore, Miller, Morris, Nitschke, Platt, Powell, Redd, Roberdeau, Rosengren, Shelley, Stumpf, Taylor, Townsend and Zilker 22. Nays None. Ord. defining the duties of Bridge Keeper. By Alderman Horton. An ordinance defining the duties of Bridge Keeper. The ordinance was read first time and on motion was referred to the Police Committee. Ord. dividing the City into Seven Wards. By Alderman Maddox. An ordinance dividing the City into Seven Wards and defining the boundaries of each and providing for a special election in conformity thereto. The ordinance was read first time and a motion made by Alderman Maddox to refer to the Ordinance Committee. Alderman Haynes moved as a substitute to indefinitely postpone the ordinance, which motion prevailed by the following vote: Yeas Aldermen Balvin, Brooker, Haynes, Kuhn, McLeMore, Miller, Morris Nitschke, Platt, Powell, Redd, Rosengren, Stumpf, Townsend & Zilker 15. Alderman Maddox moved to table the resolution, which motion was lost.
