Key Decisions from Austin City Council Meeting on June 6, 1898:

Street Infrastructure – The council approved $89.50 (after debate) to build bridges on West 2nd and 5th Streets and Congress Avenue, addressing a key transportation need across the growing city.

Present, Aldermen Belvin, Crooker, Haynes, Maddox, Mc Lamore, Morris, Nitschke, Platt, Powell, Reed, Shelley, Stumpf, and Taylor. 13. Alderman Blatt moved to reconsider the vote by which the petition of G. M. Burnett was referred to the Street Committee, which motion prevailed. --- Page break --- 11 Alderman McLemore moved that the petition be referred to the City Engineer, with instructions to remove the stand pipe complained of from its present location, to a point in the middle of the Block, east, on 8th Street, which motion prevailed. Aldermen Miller and Townsend entered the Council Chamber. Unfinished Business. Ord Amending Articles 4 + 9, Chap. 5 Title 1 of Rev Civ. Ord. Amend by adding, Enac. Clause, "and add thereto Sect. 9.a. Amend ord. by adding Sec. 9.a." There was laid before the Council, An ordinance amending Articles 4 and 9, Chapter 5, Title 1, of the Revised Civil Ordinances of the City. The ordinance was read 2nd time. Alderman Maddox moved to amend the ordinance as follows: 1st Amend the enacting clause, by adding thereto the words "and add thereto section 9.a". 2nd amend the ordinance by adding thereto section 9.a. The amendment was adopted. Alderman Taylor moved that the rules be suspended and place the ordinance on its 3rd reading and final passage, which motion prevailed by the following vote: Yeas. Aldermen Beaty, Belvin, Brooker, Haynes, Kuhn, Maddox, McLemore, Miller, Morris, Nitschke, Powell, Redd, Shelley, Taylor, Townsend and Zilker 17. Nays. Alderman Stumpf. 1. The ordinance was then read 3rd time and passed, by the following vote: Yeas, Aldermen Beaty, Belvin, Brooker, Kuhn, Maddox, Miller, Redd, Shelley, Taylor, Townsend and Zilker 11. Nays. Aldermen Haynes, McLemore, Morris, Nitschke, Blatt, Powell and Stumpf 7. Ord Approving $89.50 to build bridges on Cong. Ave. W 2nd & W 5th St. The President then laid before the Council, an ordinance appropriating the sum of $89.50 to build bridges on west 2nd and 5th Streets and Congress Avenue. The ordinance was read 2nd time. Alderman Zilker moved that the rule be suspended, and the ordinance placed on its 3rd reading, which motion was lost by the following vote: Yeas, Aldermen Beaty, Belvin, Brooker, Kuhn, McLemore, Miller, Morris, Blatt, Powell, Stumpf, Townsend and Zilker. 12. Nays. Aldermen Haynes, Maddox, Nitschke, Redd, Shelley and Taylor. 6. Alderman Horton entered the Council Chamber. Ald. Rosengren excused Ald. McLemore Alderman Rosengren moved that Alderman McLemore be excused from attendance at this session of the Council, on account of important business, which motion prevailed. Finance Com granted further time to report on petition of Mrs E C Pence. There was laid before the Council a report on the petition of Mrs. Brasse, to have certain taxes refunded, her, which motion prevailed. Alderman Nitschke moved to excuse Alderman Beaty from further attendance at this session of the Council, which motion was lost. Res. directing City Eng-r to sell condemned Fire Hose. Alderman Stumpf offered the following resolution which was read and adopted: Resolved, that the City Engineer, be instructed to at once sell the condemned Hose belonging to the City, for the best price possible. Supt. of Blind Inst. authorized to use trunk of Red River St. bet. 18 & 19th Alderman Nitschke moved that the Superintendent of the Blind Asylum be authorized to use four feet of Red River Street between 18 and 19th Streets, to erect a Dust Bin thereon, to be removed at any time the City Council may so order. The motion prevailed by the following vote: Yeas. Aldermen Beaty, Belvin, Brooker, Horton, McLemore, Miller, Nitschke, Redd, Shelley, Stumpf, Townsend and Zilker 10. Nays. Aldermen Haynes, Kuhn, Maddox, Morris, Blatt, Powell and Taylor. 8. The President laid before the Council, a bill from the Water, Light & Power Plant, of the City, for water and light furnishing to May 31st 1898. Also a communication from the Austin Serena Rubber & Mfg. Co., in regard to Fire Hose. --- Page break --- 12 Communication from Gutta Percha Rubber Mfg Co regarding Hose, furnished the City, for the Fire Department. Alderman Delvin moved that the communication in regard to Hose furnished, be referred to the City Clerk, and that he be directed to write the Company, and explain the delay in paying the claim, which motion prevailed.
