356 Regular Meeting of the City Council Austin Texas August 20, 1900 Hon J. M. Rice Mayor presiding Roll Called: Present Aldermen Fischer Glass Mortimer Holen and Stumpf Absent Alderman Durham On Motion the minutes were approved as recorded by the Clerk without reading. Petitions Memorials etc The Mayor laid before the Council a petition from F. L. McCulloch asking that he be allowed to pay taxes for 1898 on which suit had been brought and judgement rendered by paying the tax, with interest and penalty, and that the costs be remitted. Alderman Glass moved that the petition be referred to the Committee on Claims & accounts Alderman Fischer moved as a substitute that the petition be not granted. The substitute was adopted. The Mayor laid before the Council a petition from G. Mayor Guardian & Mrs Cora Henkels, a petition asking that the Assessment on certain lots belonging to the Estate of L. Henkels be reduced. On Motion the petition was referred to the Committee on Claims & accounts. By Alderman Glass Petition of R. D. Harper President and Ad. Ranks Secy of Colorado Hose Co No 2, asking that the amount deducted from salary of John Wallace of said Co during the time the Company was suspended by the Chief of the Fire Dept. be paid him. On Motion the petition was granted and the Clerk directed to place the amount in the ordinance to pay approved accounts at the next Meeting. Alderman Mortimere offered the following resolution which was read and adopted Whereas the Council, by an ordinance which became effective on the 17th day of August 1900, repealed the tax levy for 1899, of one dollar upon each one hundred dollars worth of property situated within this City and subject to taxation for the purpose of paying interest on and creating sinking fund for the outstanding Water & Light bonds of the City, and Whereas the Auditing Committee of the City is still in session, therefore,
Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin! Section 1 That said Auditing Committee is hereby instructed to make out and file in the Office of the City Clerk an itemized list of all tax payers who have not paid said tax; and said list shall show the amount of the tax in each case; and said Committee shall report its action hereunden to the Council. Section 2 That when said list shall have been filed the Auditing Committee shall credit the account of the City Collector with the amount of taxes shown by said list to be unpaid by reason of said repeal.
Alderman Nolen offered the following resolution which was read and adopted Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin! That the City Engineer and the City Marshal be and are hereby instructed to have removed all electric light and other poles on Congress Avenue south of the Colorado River to the outside of the railing along said highway and to prevent in the future the erection of other poles within said railing.
