442 The petition of the Hon Commissioners Court of Travis County asking the Council to assist in re-floorin the Colorado River Bridge at the foot of Congress avenue which had been read and laid on the table subject to call was then taken from the table. County Judge Calhoun being present was invited to address the Council which he did. Alderman Schneider for the Claims + Accounts Committee to whom was referred the protest and petition of Ira E Evans Overseer of the Austin Rapid Transit Co Co. protesting against the action of the Board of Equalization, presented a report recommending that the petition be granted. The report of the Committee was adopted Unfinished business The Mayor laid before the Council the following Veto Message. Mayors office, Austin, Texas, Sept 12th 1904 The Honorable City Council Gentlemen; I herewith return without my approval the amendments to an Ordinance entitled "An Ordinance appropriating the sum of $500.00 or as much there of as may be necessary for the purpose of erecting two bridges in the fourth ward of the City of Austin" It will be at once seen that the items appropriated by the amendments are not embraced in the caption; and that the places where the work provided for in the Amendments is to be done are none of them in the 4th ward of the City. I therefore deem it necessary that the items appropriated by the amendments should be stricken out so as to make the Ordinance conform to its Caption Respectfully Jno. H. McLeall Mayor. Veto Sustained On motion the Vote by which the Ordinance was passed was reconsidered, and the motion put, Shall the ordinance now pass notwithstanding the way on's objections which motion was lost by the following Vote Yeas none Nays Aldermen Dunham Glass Mortimer Nolen Schneider Stumpff 6. 443 Alderman Nolen offered the following resolution which was read and adopted Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin, That it is the sense of the Council that the City should bear one-half the expense of re-flooring the Congress avenue bridge across the Colorado river and fencing and repairing approaches thereto; and the Council hereby pledges the City to make the requisite appropriation in favor of Travis County to bear one-half of said expense when said work shall have been completed, the total cost to the City not exceed $1,000. By Alderman Mortimer an ordinance appropriating the sum of $300- for the purpose of paying for extra street work, filling in approaches to bridge across Waller Creek on Eaststreet. The ordinance was passed under suspension of the rules by the following vote Yeas Aldermen Dunham Glass Mortimer Nolen Schnuriden and Stumff. 6 Nays None. Alderman Stumff offered the following resolution Res Com to which was read and adopted destroy bonds Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin purchased from that a committee of three members of the Council Sinking fund be appointed by the Mayor to destroy bonds purchased and on hand for the sinking fund of the water and Light bonds of the City. The Mayor appointed Aldermen Stumff Schnuriden and Nolen to the Committee $700 for N.Austin Fire Co. provided for in the resolution [illegible] adopted. Fire Co. By Alderman Stumff an ordinance appropriating the Repairs on wagon sum of $700- to reimburse North Austin Fire Company for money by it expended for repairs on wagon. The ordinance was passed under suspension of the rules by the following vote Yeas Aldermen Dunham Glass Mortimer Nolen Schnuriden Stumff 6 Nays None. $135. Repairs By Alderman Stumff an ordinance appropriating the S.Austin Wagon sum of $135 for the purpose of repainting and repairing the wagon of the South Austin Fire Company.
