Johnson City Clerk Adjourned Regular meeting of the City Council Austin Texas April 4th 1901 Hon Jno. D. McGehee Mayor presiding Roll Called Present Alderman Dunham Fischer Glass Mortimer Schneider and Strumpp Absent Alderman Nolen On Motion of Alderman Fischer the minutes were approved as recorded by the Clerk, without reading. Petitions, remonstrance, etc By the Mayor. Petition of Anvas Houston, asking that a fine assessed against him in the Mayors Court. be remitted. On Motion the petition was granted. By the Mayor. Petition of Ophelia Simmons, asking that certain hounds and fees paid by her be refunded. On motion the petition was granted By the Mayor. Petition of Carrie Shaw asking that a fine assessed against her in the Mayors Court be remitted On motion the petition was granted By the Mayor - Petition of Ash & Hirschfeld, asking the Water and Light tax paid by them for the year 1899. be refunded. On motion the petition was referred to the Committee on Claims & accounts By the Mayor Petition of Carrie Pinson asking that certain hound fees paid by her be refunded. Fisher Esq. asking the Council to provide for payment of his fee now due as attorney for the City in the case of Malle '75 to the City and for certain amounts paid out by him as such attorney. On motion the communication was laid over to come up with an ordinance declaring the amounts, under the head of new business Alderman A. Sell entered the Council Chamber. The Mayor laid before the Council the reports of the City Clerk, the Marshall, the Physician and the Sexton for the month of March 1901 On motion the reports were referred to their appropriate Committees without reading. The report of the Committee was adopted by the following vote. Yeas Aldermen Dunham, Fischer, Glass, Mortimer & Nolen Nays Aldermen Schneider and Strumpf. The Mayor laid before the Council the report of the Board of Fire Commissioners, upon the petition of H.H. Dahlen for permission to erect a frame building within the fire limits, recommending that the petition be granted. Alderman Mortimer moved that the report of the Commissioners be adopted, which motion was lost by the following vote Yeas Aldermen Dunham, Glass and Mortimer 3 Nays Aldermen Fischer, Nolen, Schneider and Strumpf 4 The Mayor laid before the Council a report from the Board of Fire Commissioners upon the petition of P.L. Brown for permission to erect a corrugated iron shed building within the fire limits, recommending that the petition be granted. On motion the report was laid on the table. New Business By Alderman Dunham An ordinance appropriating the sum of $530. to pay an account of A.R. Fisher Esq., on file. The ordinance was passed under suspension of the rules by the following vote Yeas Aldermen Dunham, Fischer, Glass, Mortimer, Nolen Schneider and Strumpf 7 Nays None. The Mayor laid before the Council a communication from, and a bill of the Water & Light Commission which was read and on motion referred to the Water & Light Committee. By Alderman Mortimer An ordinance appropriating the sum of $150.00 for the purpose of opening Gregory Street. The ordinance was read the first time and on motion the rule was suspended and the ordinance placed on its second reading by the following vote Yeas Aldermen Dunham, Fischer, Glass, Mortimer, Nolen Schneider and Strumpf 7 Nays None. The ordinance was read the second time. Alderman Mortimer moved to amend the ordinance by adding "provided the property owners donate the land sufficient to open Street." The amendment was adopted and the ordinance as amended was passed by the following vote. Yeas Aldermen Dunham, Fischer, Glass, Mortimer, Nolen Schneider and Strumpf 7 Nays None. By Alderman Mortimer An ordinance appropriating the sum of $500.00 for the purpose repairing West Austin Fire Hall --- Page break --- 464 $500.00 to repair The ordinance was read the first time and on motion was referred to E.C. Fine Sch. the five Committee. By Alderman Struff an ordinance appropriating the sum of $1640.76 for the purpose of paying approved accounts. Ord. Amends By Alderman Schneider an ordinance repealing articles Gen. Ord. of the General Penal ordinances of the City of Austin Penal Ord's No. 350, 351, 352. The ordinance was read the first time and on motion was referred to the ordinance Committee, the City Attorney. The Mayor laid before the Council the returns of the election held March 11th 1901. Authorizing the increase of the tax from 10 to 12 mills. Also the returns of an election held Tax Election to increase in the Fire Dept. on the year ending April 21st 1902. On motion the canvassing of these returns of these elections was postponed until Saturday April 6th 1901.
