Shelley, President of the Council Presiding Roll Called Present – Aldermen Davis, Hume, Low, Mortimen Nitschke Redd Schneider, Shelley, Shumate & Welch 10 Absent Aldermen Gillis Croxton Waddox Stumph 4 The following Call of the Council was read. Austin Texas July 17th 1901 A special meeting of the City Council is hereby Called to this July 17th 1901. for the purpose of taking such steps as the Council may deem proper looking to the payment of interest due July 1st 1901 on $45,000.⁰⁰ dollars of City High School bonds of the City of Austin. W. D. Shelley, acting mayor J. M. Shumate (6th Ward) J. L. Huuzie 4th Ward Theodor Low 7th Ward W. B. Davis Joseph Stumph Mortimer Wm. Welch J. W. Montgomery, City Marshall of the City of Austin, do hereby Certify that the above Call has been served upon the following named Aldermen, by having it read to each of them in person Viz. J. P. Schneider, J. W. Redd, R. W. Gillis, W. B. Davis, Joseph Stumph, P. D. Mortimer, Wm. Welch – and that Aldermen Waddox, Croxton and Nitschke have been served by having a true copy left at each of their residences. Aldermen Waddox & Croxton being out of the City, and Nitschke being out at Work W. Montgomery City Marshal. President Board Hon. Jefferson Johnson, President of the Board of School Trustees was invited to address the Council on the matters contained in the Call, which he did. Mr. Lea A. Prue a member of the Board of School Trustees was invited to address the Council, which he did. By Alderman Hume An ordinance appropriating the Sum of $1125.⁰⁰ to pay the interest due July 1st 1901 on $45,000 of Austin City High School bonds. The Ordinance was read the first time and a motion made to suspend the rule and place it on its second reading, which motion was lost by the following Vote – Yeas Aldermen Davis Hume Low Mortimer Redd Schneider Shelley Shumate & Welch 9 --- Page break --- 533 1 Mays Alderman Nitsche The following Communication was placed before the Council by the Chairman Austin Texas July 15th 1901 To the Honorable Mayor and City Council of Austin, Texas: You are earnestly Invitation to and Cordially invited to attend either in a body or by Committee the attend opening Ceremonies incident upon the opening of Grant Chapel, located on Grant Chapel Pennsylvania Avenue, in the eastern part of the City, to take place Sunday July 21 at 2:30 P.M. This will be an occasion of great rejoicing on the part of a large and representative body of the Colored Citizens of Austin, and Your presence will tend to an encouragement in their religious and mental improvement. By advising the undersigned of Your action and the members who will attend, Conveyances will be provided. Respectfully F. W. Chappell Pastor in Charge accepted On motion the invitation was accepted. Alderman Nitsche moved that the ordinance appropriating the sum of $1125. to pay the interest due July 1st 1901. on the High School bonds, be referred to a special Committee of three, which motion was lost by the following Vote – Yeas Alderman Nitsche Schneider Weir Nays Alderman Davis Hume Love Mortimer Redd, Shelley 3 The President of the Council appointed Alderman Mortimer a 7 Committee of one, to represent the Council on the occasion of the opening of Grant Chapel on July 21st 1901. Alderman Nitsche moved to reconsider the Vote by which the Council refused to suspend the rule and place the ordinance appropriating the sum of $1125. to pay interest due July 1st 1901. on the High School bonds, on its second reading – which motion prevailed. It was then moved to suspend the rule and place the ordinance on its second reading, which motion prevailed by the following Vote – Yeas Alderman Weir, Hume Love, Mortimer Nitsche Redd Shelley, [illegible] [illegible] 6 Nays Alderman Schneider 1 On Motion the Council adjourned Geo.
