Tax & Fee Refunds Granted – The council approved a refund of occupation taxes to B.J. Campbell and referred several other refund requests from citizens to committees for review.

Infrastructure & Safety Projects Funded – The city allocated $50 for surveying the western city boundary, $150 for cemetery fence repairs, $250 for extra labor and teams, and approved a 500-foot fire hose purchase.

Regulations on Fire Safety – Council introduced an ordinance to regulate the storage of hay and other combustible materials within city fire limits, referred to committee for further review.

Mayor's Congratulations – The council unanimously passed a resolution congratulating Mayor R.E. White on his recent marriage, wishing him happiness and prosperity.

Street Naming & Financial Transfers – Council retained "Pitts Avenue" as an official street name and transferred $857 between municipal accounts to manage bonded debt and water interest payments.

604 Regular meeting of the City Council Austin Texas January 06, 1902 Hon W S Shelley, President of the Council presiding Roll Called Present: Aldermen Crooken Davis Hume Low Maddax Mortimen Nitschke Redd Schneider Shelley Shumate Strumpf & Ulb Absent none. 13 On motion the minutes were approved as recorded by the Clerk without reading. Petitions, Memorials &c Pet Lawrence By the Chair - Petition of Lawrence Smith asking that Smith (round) fees Certain ground fees paid by him be refunded. On motion the petition was referred to the Claims and accounts Committee. Mem. Typographical By the Chair Memorial of the Austin Typographical Union Union - printing relating to City printing. Read and on motion referred to the Printing Committee. " " By Alderman Crooken memorial of the organized working people of Austin regarding public printing - Read and on motion referred to the Printing Committee. Mrs Harrell By the Chair Petition of Mrs P A Harrell asking to have (round fees) Certain ground fees refunded. Read and on motion referred to the Committee on Claims and accounts. E M Wrass By the Chair Petition of E M Wrass asking that the Taxes Penalty and interest charged against him on taxes for 1899, be remitted. Read and on motion referred to the Claims + accounts Committee. Mrs Addie By Alderman Shumate - Petition of Mrs Addie Miller Miller Taxes asking correction of assessment - Read and on motion referred to the Claims and accounts Committee. Nays none. 13 Reports of City Officers Reports City The Chair laid before the Council the reports of City Officers Officers for the month of Dec 1901, which were on motion referred to their appropriate Committees without reading, except the report of the Treasurer, which was read and on motion referred to the Finance Committe. Reports of Standing Committees H W M... Alderman Maddax for the Finance Committee to whom Comm. was referred the reports of the Assessor Collector, the Treasurer and the City Clerk for the month of Nov 1901, presented a report stating that they had ex amined same and found them Correct. --- Page break --- 605 On motion the reports were adopted. Fire Hose Alderman Schneider for the Fire Commissioners, presented a purchased report, stating that in accordance with an Ordinance passed by the City Council they had advertised for, opened and awarded the contract for 500 feet of fire hose. On motion the report was adopted and the award confirmed. Spelling Alderman Stumpf for the Ordinance Committee to whom Ordinance -- was referred the spelling Ordinance etc., presented a report with a substitute for said Ordinance and Amendments, and recommended the adoption of the substitute. On motion the report was laid over to come up under the head of new business together with the substitute proposed by the Committee as unfinished business. $50. for survey The Chair laid before the Council an Ordinance appropriating the Co Line C & G Ry. sum of $50. to survey west boundary line of the City, and the Rail Road Village, within the City limits. The ordinance was read the second time and passed under suspension of the rule by the following Vote Yeas Alderman Crooker, Davis, Heline, Lord, Maddock Mortimer, Ritchelie, Redd, Schneider, Shelley, Shumate Stumpf, Weil. Nays None. 13 Spitting The Chair laid before the Council the spitting Ordinance, together Ord. with the report of the Ordinance Committee and the substitute proposed by said Committee. On motion the whole matter was postponed until the next regular meeting of the Council as new business. Resolution Alderman Mortimer offered the following resolution which Congratulatory was unanimously adopted by a rising Vote to Mayor. Whereas.- The Hon R.E. White, Mayor of the City of Austin, and the presiding Officer of this body, the City Council, has just visited and returned from the scenes of 'Boy Hoods happy days' his old home in Tennessee and Whereas.- He has defied the Biblical injunction "It is not good that man should live alone" and thereby establishing a "Queen" in his heart and home, therefore Be it resolved, That the hearty and sincere congratulations and well wishes of the City Council are hereby tendered, him and his, and wishes them a long life of unalloyed happiness and prosperity. Be it further resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be presented him and also inscribed in the minutes of this meeting of the City Council Austin, Texas, Jan. 6, 1902. Bill appro. By Alderman Weil - An Ordinance appropriating the sum Cem. fence of $150. for the purpose of repairing the Cemetery fence The ordinance was passed under suspension of the rules by the following Vote --- Page break --- Yeas. Resolution which was read and adopted. to Gen. fund Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin; That the City Treasurer be and is hereby directed to transfer from the "Bonded Indebtedness account" to the "General fund account" the sum of Eight-hundred and fifty seven ($857.) dollars this being the amount heretofore borrowed from the general fund by the interest fund. Alderman Maddas offered the following resolution which was read and adopted. Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin; Transfer That the City Treasurer be and he is hereby directed to transfer $49.11" to int from the "Bonded Indebtedness account" to the account of fund with Water Interest on the water and Light bonds" the sum of Forty Nine 11/100 ($49.11) dollars. By Alderman Nitoche an ordinance appropriating the $250. extra labor sum of $250.00 for the purpose of paying for extra Labor & teams. The Ordinance was passed under suspension of the rules by the following vote Yeas Aldermen Crooker Davis Hume Low Maddas Mortimer Nitoche Redd Schneider Shelley Shumate Strumpf Teel- 13 Nays None. Alderman Strumpf offered the following Res. Pitts Resolution which was read and adopted. Avenue Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin, that the name of the street originally designated on the map of the City of Austin as "Pitts Avenue" be retained as that designated and that said street shall not be numbered according to the system of Numbering streets running East and West in the City of Austin Stay ordinance By Alderman Schneider an Ordinance to regulate the keeping of Hay and other Combustible Material within the fire limits of the City of Austin The Ordinance was read the first time and on Motion was referred to the Ordinance Committee. app'n u/es. By Alderman Maddas An ordinance appropriating the sum of $668.25 to pay approved accounts. The Ordinance was read the first time and a Motion made to suspend the rule and place it on its second reading which Motion prevailed by the following vote Yeas Aldermen Crooker Davis Hume Low Maddas Mortimer Nitoche Redd Schneider Shelley Shumate Strumpf Teel- 13 Nays None --- Page break --- 607 The ordinance was read the second time Alderman Brooker Moved to Amend by adding Ordinance To refunding To J. Campbell $3.75, being accupation [illegible] [illegible] taxes paid by him. The amendment was adopted and J.J. Campbell the ordinance as Amended was passed by the following vote Yeas Alderman Brooker, Davis, Hene, Lord, Meador, Mortimer, Wiltshke, Redd, Schneider, Shelley, Shumate, Struff, Speck 13 Nays None. The chair laid before the Council a Communication S.R. Fisher from S.R. Fisher Esq., enclosing Check for balan ce of deposit returning money made by the Clerk of the Supreme Court of the U.S. from deposit in the Bake of R.S. Bartholomew vs the City = On Motion the U.S. Communication was ordered filed, and the clerk directed to turn the check over to the proper officer.
