The Mayor laid before the Council the following Veto Message Austin, Texas, May 19th 1904 To the Honorable City Council I return to you herewith, without my approval, an ordinance, entitled “An ordinance to amend Article 127 of the Revised Penal Ordinances of the City of Austin,” and to repeal all ordinances in Conflict therewith.” The purpose and effect of this ordinance is to enlarge the bound limits of the City of Austin, which are already quite extensive; to such an extent that it would be impossible for the police force to properly discharge the duties devolving upon him, in such enlarged territory. The discharge of such duties in the present bound limits taxes the utmost Capacity of that department, and it would not, in my opinion, be wise to impose additional duties on or in that department, without the employment of additional assistance The financial Condition of the City does not warrant the employment of such additional help for this purpose, and is not Constrained, therefore, to return to you this ordinance with my Veto thereof. R.W. Miller, Mayor. Alderman Crooker moved to reconsider the Veto by which the ordinance was passed, which motion prevailed. Alderman Maeken entered the Council Chamber. defining the duties of the City Engineer, which was read the third time, and on motion of Alderman Nitschke was laid over subject to call. The Mayor laid before the Council the plumbing ordinance which was read by caption the third time, and on motion was laid over until the next regular meeting. Alderman Shumate for the Special Committee on the Iglehart Fountain, presented the following report. To the Honorable Mayor and City Council Your Special Committee to whom was referred Iglehart Fountain the matter of the public drinking fountain presented to the City of Austin by Mrs. Robt. Iglehart, beg leave to report, and recommend that an iron fence of an inexpensive pattern be placed around the fountain half of the expense of same to be borne by the City, the other half to be paid by Mrs. Iglehart. We also recommend that an incandescent or arc light be placed near the fountain for the convenience of those who wish to use the water after twilight, and also to prevent depredations on the fountain. We also recommend that the City Engineer be authorized to grade the street immediately east of the fountain for a distance of at least 100 feet. We further recommend that a formal acceptance of the fountain be drawn up by the City Attorney and presented to this Council at its next Meeting. Respectfully submitted J. M. Shumate E. C. On motion of Alderman Redd the Market Market Committee Committee was authorized to dispose of certain authorized to sell Articles belonging to the City and now in charge of the Certain property City Marshal. Alderman Nitschke for the Street Committee to whom W. B. Walker & Son was referred the petition of W. B. Walker & Sons for to erect platform permission to erect a platform in front of their building on N. 4th Street, by permission of the Council, presented a report recommending that the petition be granted, On motion the report was adopted.

192 Resolution to purchase Street Signs Alderman Shumate offered the following resolution, which was read and referred to the Street Committee. Resolved that the Street Committee be and are hereby authorized to receive bids for the making of certain signs to designate the various Streets of Austin, it being understood that any reputable Concern shall have the privilege for the best Consideration in the judgement of the Street Committee to place Signs on the various Street Corners in the City of Austin designating the name of said Street in plain and approved lettering, the arrangement & design of placing, on which, when incurred, said Street Sign, Said advertisement not to be more Conspicuous than the Said name of Street.
