Austin Street Work and Sewer Projects Approved

Storm Sewer Expansion: The city accepted a $1,633 bid to extend storm sewer lines on Congress Avenue, marking progress on the city's infrastructure development.

Public Fountain Approved: Citizens' petition for a free public fountain at Congress Avenue and 5th Street was granted, with the Water and Light Commission ordered to provide water for it.

Street Repairs Funded: The council allocated approximately $1,150 across multiple ordinances to repair streets throughout Austin's different wards, including major work on 19th, 20th, and 9th Streets.

Fire Safety Improvement: A new fire hydrant will be installed at the corner of Bull and Baylor Streets following a citizen petition.

Dam Rebuild Negotiations: The city authorized continued negotiations with a private party about rebuilding a dam, with a formal contract to be submitted for future approval.

194 Regular Meeting of the City Council Austin, Texas. June 20, 1904 Hon R. A. White, Mayor presiding. Call Called – Present Aldermen Crooker, Haynes, Hume, Macken Moore, Nitschke, Redd & Schneider, Shelley, Shumate Smith, Swett 12 Absent Aldermen Maddox & Weller 2 On motion the Minutes were approved as read by the Clerk, without reading. Petitions. The Mayor laid before the Council the following Petitions, Viz: J. W. Pradew for damages. Read and referred to the Committee on Claims & accounts. Citizens against any chance in the pound Ordinance. City on D. H. Vass to Correct Assessment, Read and referred to the Claims & accounts Committee. Reports of City Officers The Mayor laid before the Council the reports of the Assessor & Collector & the Treasurer for the month of May 1904, which were referred to their appropriate Committees without reading. Alderman Welles entered the Council Chamber. Reports of Standing Committees. Alderman Nitschke for the Street Committee, presented the following report, which was read and adopted Austin, Texas 6/20, 1904 To the Hon R. A. White, Mayor and Board of Aldermen City of Austin: Gentlemen: Your Committee on Streets to whom was referred the advertising for bids for the extension of the Storm Sewer Laterals on Congress Avenue, have advertised for bids and have received one bid, begs leave to recommend that the said bid of H. H. Ruhmann for $1633.00 be accepted & the Contract awarded to said H. H. Ruhmann and that the Mayor, by Attorney and Street Committee be instructed to make and execute a Contract with said H. H. Ruhmann J. B. Nitschke Geo. L. Hume Committee on Streets. Finance Alderman Haynes for the Finance Committee to whom was referred the reports of the Assessor & Collector, the Treasurer and the Clerk for the month of April 1904, presented a report stating that same had been examined and found Correct. The report of the Committee was adopted --- Page break --- 195 water Light on Alderman Miller for the water and Light Committee to petition with citi whom was referred the petition of the citi zens asking to be zens for free water for furnished water free for a fountain to be erected on the fountains corner of Congress Avenue & 5th streets, presented a report recommending that the petition be granted and the Water and Light Commission be requested and instructed to furnish the water necessary to supply the proposed fountain On motion the report was adopted. Work on petition Alderman Miller for the water and Light Committee to whom of Citizens for fire was referred a petition of citizens to have a fire hydrant hydrant at Bull placed at the corner of Bull and Baylor Streets presented a Baylor streets report recommending that the petition be granted and the water and Light Commission be requested and instructed to place a hydrant at the point suggested in the petition On motion the report was adopted. Select Committees Citizens Committee Alderman Thovedridge for the Citizens Committee to whom on re-proposition was referred the matter of the proposition of J. Jacobs to rebuild Dam to rebuild the Dam presented a report which was read and discussed by some of the Committee Alderman Haynes offered the following resolution which was read and adopted Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin: That the Hon. Citizens Committee be and are here by requested to continue the correspondence and negotiations with Dr. Jacobs looking to a final contract for the re-building of the dam, such contract, etc., to be submitted to the Council & Water & Light Commission for approval or such official action as may be necessary to make a contract or to obtain a change of our Charter necessary to empower the Council to enter into such contract. Alderman Brookes moved that the chair appoint a Committee of 5 Aldermen to consider the report of the Citizens Committee, which motion was lost. Unfinished business Unfinished business The Mayor laid before the Council the plumbing Plumbing Ordinance. Alderman Nitschke made the Ordinance point of Order that the Ordinance had never been read in full to the Council and called for the reading in full.
