Austin's $12,000 Water Fund Dispute

Wednesday, May 31, 1905 special called

Funding Debate: The city council met to decide whether to loan $12,000 from the City Hall fund to the Water and Light Commission, but the proposal failed to pass with 8 aldermen voting against it and only 6 in favor.

Fund Transfer Resolution: A separate resolution was introduced to move money from the City Hall Fund to the general revenue fund, though the outcome of this vote is unclear from the record.

Close Vote: The narrow margin (8-6) shows significant disagreement among council members about how to allocate city funds between infrastructure projects.

Infrastructure Priorities: The meeting highlights early 1900s tensions between maintaining city buildings versus investing in essential utilities like water and lighting services.
