Called meeting of the City Council Austin, Texas, June 23, 1905 Hon W. D. Shelley, Mayor presiding Roll Called Present Aldermen Armstrong Brooker Owen Elmore Gibbs Powell Redd Smith Von Rosenberg Viehlem 10 Absent Aldermen Haynes Wacker Wullen & Shinnate 4 The following Call of the Council was read. Austin, Texas June 28th 1905 A special meeting of the City Council of the City of Austin, Texas, is hereby Called to meet in the Council Chamber at the City Hall at 8 o’clock P.M. Friday June 28th 1905, Call Council for the purpose of Canvassing the Vote and declaring the results of the special election held June 20th 1905 for the purpose of electing a Water and Light Commissioner for the City of Austin, and for the further purpose of passing an ordinance appropriating the necessary amount to pay the expenses of said election. W. D. Shelley Mayor Tom Smith 7th ward Henry Perry Anthony E. Cunes. Austin, Texas June 28th 1905 I hereby Certify that I have served the above Call by reading same to the following named Aldermen to wit: W. A. Redd H. O. Wullen W. J. Owen Henry Gibbs Tom Smith P. H. Powell Von Rosenberg L. J. H. Brooker T. J. Armstrong E. J. Viehlem H. L. Haynes O. A. Elmore, and by leaving a Copy of Call at the residence of Pat Shinnate and Joe J. Wacker they both being out of the City D. J. Morris City Marshal Aldermen Brooker moved that a Committee Canvass Vote of three be appointed to Canvass the Vote of the Water & Light Election held June 20th 1905, which motion prevailed Commissioner And the Mayor appointed Aldermen Armstrong Smith & Von Rosenberg. On motion of Alderman Powell the Council to a recess pending the report of the Committee Council Called to order. The Committee to Canvass the Vote presented the following report: We your Committee appointed to Canvass the returns of election of Water Light Commissioner held June 20th 1905, beg leave to report that we find H. Z. Zisken received 482 Votes John W. Drawatha 37. Votes --- Page break --- 380 Iom D Smith E Von Rosenberg Groty Armstrong A. J. Zickon having received a majority of all the votes cast, he was declared then elected Water Light Commissioner for the term. The Mayor laid before the Council an ordinance appropriating the sum of $-- for the purpose of paying the expenses of the special election held June 20th 1905, to elect a Water Light Commissioner, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of J. A. Bradshaw The clerks stated that the Judges had sent in their bills for services of Judges & Clerks at said election, some fixing the compensation at $3.00, some at $4.00 and some that had not fixed an amount, and stated that he had not be able to make up the pay roll, as he supposed that all would be entitled to the same amount for the service. The ordinance was read the first time and on motion the rule was suspended and the ordinance placed on its second reading by the following Vote Yeas Alderman Armstrong Crooken. Bunes. Moore Powell. Petre. Reed & Smith. Von Rosenberg & Wilhelm Nays none. The ordinance was read the second time. Alderman Smith moved that the pay of Judges and Clerks of election be fixed at $4.00 each Alderman Moore as a substitute moved that it be fixed at $2.50 Alderman Powell moved that it be fixed at $2.00 the amount provided for in the state laws. Alderman Wilhelm moved that it be fixed $3.00 each Alderman Moore accepted the amendment of Alderman Wilhelm. The vote was taken on the motion of Alderman Powell fixing the amount at $2.00 Yeas Alderman Armstrong Crooken. Von Rosenberg 7 Nays Alderman Bunes. Moore. Petre. Reed Smith & The Vote was then taken on the substitute offered by Alderman Moore making the amount $2.50 each, and the substitute adopted by the following Vote Yeas Alderman Armstrong Crooken Moore Petre Reed & Smith & Wilhelm 7 Nays Alderman Bunes Powell & Von Rosenberg 3 The ordinance was then amended by inserting in the blank the amount of $18.80 A motion was then made to suspend the rule and place the ordinance on its third reading, which was lost by the following Vote A. J. Zielken declared elected Water & Light Commissionen Compensation of Judges + Clerks of election fixed.
