Austin's 1905 Awning Rules & Street Work Budget

Awning Regulations: The city passed new rules requiring wooden awnings on Congress Avenue, 6th Street, and 11th Street to be replaced with approved wooden, cloth, or iron bracket designs, with penalties for non-compliance.

Building Condemnation Authority: Council granted the City Engineer power to condemn unsafe buildings, awnings, and structures within fire limits and set deadlines for their removal.

Street Labor Funding: The council approved $500 in emergency funding to pay for extra street labor and equipment needs.

Strong Support: Nearly all aldermen voted in favor (12-13 yes votes), with only one or two dissenting votes on the awning measures.

Special meeting of the City Council Austin, Texas, July 20, 1905 Hon. W. D. Shelley, Mayor, presiding Roll Called Present Aldermen Armstrong, Crooker, Ouesst, Haynes Miller, Moore, Petri, Vawter, Adkins, Shumate, Smith Voer-Vossenberg & Wilhelm Absent Alderman Wacken The following Call of the Council was read Austin, Texas, July 20th, 1905 A Special meeting of the City Council is hereby called to meet in the Council Chamber at City Call Council Hall at 8:30 o’clock P.M. this 20th day of July 1905 for the purpose of Considering and acting upon the following ordinances 1st To amend the ordinance governing the erection of Awnings to buildings on Congress Avenue and 6th Street 2nd To Consider and act upon an ordinance providing for the Condemnation of Awnings in the City, and 3rd To pass an ordinance making an appropriation to pay for extra street labor. Shumate 6th " Henry Petri I hereby Certify, that I have this day Served the within Call for a Special Meeting of the City Council by handing a true copy read by Policeman [illegible] to each of the following named Aldermen, to-wit; Fred Miller, H. Trillion Moore Petri Powell, Redd shufmate & Swidith 12 Nays Aldermen Von Rosenberg 1 By Alderman Smith An Ordinance amending An Ordinance prohibiting the placing or retaining of wooden Awnings on the Sidewalks on Congress avenue and Eleventh Street, and on sixth Street between east and west Avenues, and providing that when any awning is Condemned within these limits, it shall be replaced, it shall be by a wooden, cloth or iron bracket awning to be approved by the Street Committee and the City Engineer, and providing a penalty for the violation thereof. : The ordinance was read the first Time and passed Under suspension of the rules by the following Vote Yeas Aldermen Armstrong Crooker, Eurres Haynes, ...
