Austin Selects New City Hall Design

Special meeting of the City Council Austin, Texas, August 07, 1906 Hon W O Shelley, Mayor, presiding Call Called. Present Aldermen Cuneo, Haynes, McCracken, McMillan, Moore Petri, Von Rosenberg & Wilheml. 8 Absent Aldermen Armstrong, Croxton, Powell, Radd. 6. Shumate & Smith The foregoing Call of the Council was read. Austin, Texas, Aug 7th 1906 Call Council A Special session of the City Council of the City of Austin, Texas, is hereby Called to meet in the Council Chamber in City Hall at 530 o clock P.M. this 7th day of August 1906, for the purpose of considering plans and specifications for City Hall, also for hearing & considering a report of the Special Committee on petition of Mrs. Shileax to erect an Awning W.O.Shelley, Mayor C.W.Moore A.B.Haynes T.D.Smith I hereby certify that I have served the above Call by mailing same to each of the following named Aldermen, to wit: C.W.Redd, A.E.Haynes Cuneo, P.H.Powell, E.Von Rosen berg, L.W.Croxton, J.W. McCracken, A.J.Armstrong, H.Petri, G.F.Wilhelm, T.D.Smith, Geo W.Moore & H.Haynes, and by placing a copy of same at J W.McCracken's last known place of business, he being out of the City. R.J.Morris, Marshal. Architects requested Alderman Moore moved that the different Architects to submit & explain be requested to appear before the Council with their plans new City Hall plans, which Motion prevailed. On motion of Alderman Petri, Architect W.A.Kahn was asked to present his plans. Wm Watson presented and explained to the Council his plans. Aldermen Armstrong and Smith entered the Council Chamber. Architect Page then presented and explained his plans. Report Special The Mayor laid before the Council a report from the Special Committee on New City Hall, recommending the Committee on New City Hall adoption of the plans and specifications presented and prepared by A.P.Page, Jr. Plans of A.P.Page On motion the report was adopted and the was adopted. Committee Continued. --- Page break --- 561 Architect to Alderman Moore moved that the Architect be Complete plans directed to complete plans and to advertise for bids for & advertise for the erection of the building and that the Committee be bids for building directed to procure temporary quarters for City officials, Which motion prevailed. Alderman Moore for the special Committee to whom New Awning was referred the Petition of Smith & Cole and ordinance submitted having presented an ordinance to amend the by special Committee Awning ordinance On motion the ordinance was referred to the ordinance Committee On motion the Council adjourned Jno. S. Johnson City Clerk Austin, Texas, Aug. 6. 1906 Horton W. Shelley Mayor, & Board of Aldermen, City of Austin Gentlemen: We, your special Committee appointed by you Csk Page Jr. plans to advertise for plans and specifications for a new City Hall & instruct for the City of Austin beg leave to report that we have Mayor respectfully examined the plans and specifications Hall submitted to your Committee and recommend the adoption of plans and specifications submitted by Wm. B. Page Jr, Architect for the following reasons First we believe that plans submitted by him are best suited to the needs of the City and will meet all of our requirements for a number years. Second that said plans and specifications are accompanied by a Certified Check for five hundred dollars and a bona fide bid from a responsible builder of this City, which guarantees the erection of the building for the amount stated in the estimate, Said bid and Certified Check are herewith attached & this report. And we further recommend that the Mayor be instructed to enter into Contract with Wm. B.
