Austin's 1906 Court Relocation & Police Changes

Monday, November 19, 1906 regular

Court & Jail Separation Debate: Citizens petitioned to move the Court and Jail away from the new City Hall to south Austin, but the council voted to refer the matter to the City Hall Committee rather than form a special citizens committee—a narrow defeat for relocation supporters.

Sunday Law Under Review: A citizen petition requesting repeal of Austin's Sunday laws was referred to the Ordinance Committee, indicating public desire to change restrictions on Sunday activities.

Police Force Changes: Officer E.H. Fallwell's death led to the appointment of E.H. Fallwell (likely a relative) as his replacement, approved by council vote with 12 in favor and 2 opposed.

Infrastructure & Budget Approvals: Council approved spending for multiple repairs including $110 for the Arsenal bridge at 20th Street, $100 for tax collector support, $15 for South Austin street repairs, and $1,025 for sanitary employee salaries.

Building Permits & Fire Safety: The council approved O.G. Stephenson's request to construct an iron-clad building within fire limits, passing by a 8-6 vote despite safety concerns from some aldermen.
